I have a 6 Pro on Vodafone and no VoLTE. I put the Spark sim out of my wife's phone in my 6 pro and VoLTE was provisoned and the 4g calling selection in settings was available.

So carrier specific for VoLTE, not country limited.

Well the original article was about Google adding carrier specific settings into the Pixel 6 (and 7 I guess) so that a user in one part of the US when roaming to another part onto a carrier who had removed all their 3G cells, the user could still make voice calls and for international users. So they must have reached out to a number carriers both domestically and internationally to get their settings for VoLTE and insert them into the update.

5G is not so important so that might be why it doesn't work for Spark while VoLTE does.

While it doesn't work on Voda is anybody's guess - negotiations broke down, never started, who knows

And interestingly a OnePlus 9 I bought from Amazon (designed for the US market) gets both VoLTE and 5G here on Vodafone.  So it can't be that hard to do for all models.

I'd assume that since Oppo officially supports NZ that OnePlus also receive that compatibility as well. IIRC Android has the same sort of 'carrier settings' capability that iOS has so at least in theory the need to have special builds with setting baked in should be rarity.

Interesting segment on the Friday Checkout: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7QF6pVc8u4 it appears that Google is concerned about marketshare and yet have done zero to fix it - like maybe realising that there are more than 14 countries in the world being a good start (6 years and still not available in NZ - maybe the govt should have had their datacenter approval dependent on their providing Pixel phones in NZ).

Google succeeded because it's core search innovation and later mail innovation was international in scope and influence. This in turn fed back into the US market. That's really hard to do with phones because you run into the wall with carriers.

Long story short I think Google is trying a 'carrier first' approach with Pixel. That's a big problem because there's no carrier signed up in NZ. In any case, it's a problem for Google because innovation is international in scope and multiple Google products and services are USA centric now in effect there is no positive cycle carrying things forward if the platform is not available.

Getting back to the VoLTE discussion - if it works on Spark does it also mean those of us on Skinny also get VoLTE?

I heard anecdotally that Spark were interested in selling Pixel phones and wanted Google to provide a few for testing but they were not wiling.  No documentary evidence but perhaps Google didn't think the NZ market was worth the hassle.  Since Pixel phones are sold officially in Oz, how hard would it have been so add the settings for the NZ carriers? Does that mean if an Aussie comes to NZ using a Pixel phone and encounters an are where there is no 3G then they have no voice? A veryl small subset of customers to be sure but there is always going to be one.

The Spark thing does not ring true for me.

Good question for Vodafone because Vf sell Pixel in AU and have presence here.

I am on Skinny and have been told that they have provisioned my SIM for V0LTE but I am not sure if it is working on my Pixel 6Pro.

What does this screenshot tell someone who understands it better than me?

@robfish When you place a standard Voice call does the handset pass down to 3G or stay on 4G?
