kiwitrc: When I first setup my Desire, I used a standard gmail account to test with but now want to change it as I want to use the Calendars on the other account. Trouble is when I go delete the acount i dont want, it says I need to reset the phone and that I will lose all my apps and personal data??

Anyone know how to get around this or backup all my downloaded apps etc?

Ah, I believe that could prove problematic, since all apps (except those installed directly via something like Astro) are tied to whichever Google account you set up on. I'm at work, so can't take the time to check on possible fixes - perhaps ask somewhere like Androidforums?

I am new to this Android:) Been a loyal Nokia user for many years and recently got onto the iPhone 3GS.

I am wondering:

1) What language packs are installed by default on the Android HTC Desire? Can it display Chinese?
2) How much do applications cost?

Mine has English, Spanish, Italian, French. It displays chinese text in the browser though, unlike WinMo, which requires the installation of language display data.

Paid applications as a rule are very cheap - 0.99 US cents/pence to around 5 dollars/pounds. Many are free, and most of the paid ones have free 'lite' alternatives. All paid apps have a 24 hour trial install, where you can get a refund and uninstall the app (if you install a second time there is no refund option).

The browser and phone can both display Chinese flawlessly. And after installing Google Pinyin, I can now type both simplified and traditional Chinese.

Google Pinyin is free of charge by the way :) Gotta love Google!

Are there limits as to how many IMAP/POP email accounts the default email client can handle? And am I right that gmail accounts are treated differently and that the Android OS 'revolves' around your primary gmail account?

It revolves around your Google account, of which your email is a part, yes.

I believe there is no problem with adding several IMAP/POP accounts.

Gmail itself is handled differently, its automatically set to 24/7 push by default, but you don't have to use it that way if you'don't want to. For example I have my Google account set up on the phone, and my Calender syncs through that (so that CallTrack works, it automatically backs up my call logs to my calender), but contacts/email go through Exchange sync (since HTCs exchange email software is better than the inbuilt Gmail app IMO, one of which is being able to set my Push hours).

I shouldn't see why not, seeing as we got our phones from the exact same place :)

You'll be able to input Chinese characters via Pinyin and character strokes.

Cheers NZTechFreak, that's excellent to hear. Having been a Nokia user, it's a pain trying to find a handset with Chinese languages. Android is looking better and better by the day... so is this desirable Desire:) ---> Sorry I couldn't resist, hehe :D

Noob question, is there an "App store" much like the iPhone? Or would you need to connect it to a PC?

I thought I would never be interested in HTC phones let alone Android but it looks like they are both up with the play and looking likely to take me over to the "other side"!
