Why doesn't it make sense for them to offer a wider range of Android phones?

I think they've made a mistake with the P500. It has similar specs to the Xperia X8 which retails for $360ish (although running 2.1). Whereas the P500 goes for around $400 at most places and $449 on their store.

Introducing the X5 to replace the P500, or dropping the price on the P500 and phasing out the U8150 would make sense.

Yeah agreed, although I like my U8150 (well, now there is a custom rom on it and it's responsive) it does seem like a phone they could easily drop.

Yeah agreed, although I like my U8150 (well, now there is a custom rom on it and it's responsive) it does seem like a phone they could easily drop.

There are too many competing phones in that same bracket from mainstream manufacturers for the U8150 to stand out.

And now the 5800 is going to 2.2, so there is even less between them

after the talk in this thread re the p500, had a nosey at the specs.

no way this phone should sell for 450.00 nice phone, with okay specs but 350 should be the absolute limit.

The response they gave doesn't give much information, and for "customisations" top hold up deployments in multiple markets I'm guessing one of three things:

1) The current 2.2 image or hardware isn't working as well as expected and there are issues with it which they are trying to sort out. This is probably the most likely cause of the problem.
Why do I suspect this?
The unit has been for sale in Finland for some time as the U8800. Despite this, several of the reviews which have popped up on the web show the X5 as having a few niggly issues with the camera quality, and WiFi. You would have thought that they would have got these sorted before sending the units out.

2) Along with Huawei's entry into the mid/high end segment of the market ,they are also going to introduce a new UI, which has taken longer to develop than hoped and is delaying the roll-out in multiple countries.
Why is this less likely?
If they were about to roll out a new UI, surely they would have shown this, or talked about it at CES. One of the things that makes Huawei stand out is the use of stock Android. Having the stock Android UI also drastically reduces their development costs, allows them to rapidly move to new markets and saves them having to translate everything to multiple languages.

3) They're rolling out Android 2.3 along with this release.
Highly unlikely. Why?
It looks like they are having issues getting 2.2 running well, let alone moving to 2.3. Currently the only factory 2.3 that I am aware of is the Nexus S, meaning that they aren't trying to play catch up with anyone, and there is no real pressure to put out a 2.3 at this time. They would be much better off just getting the 2.2 out the door, then offering the 2.3 upgrade later.
In addition, even though the specs are up to it, and I'm sure the question was asked many times at CES, Huawei have never made even the slightest suggestion that 2.3 would be coming to this device.

I'm sure that if it hasn't been released already, that we'll learn more through the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona between the 14-17 of this month
