Ramboss: Has anyone recently imported a Defy? am wondering if the imported ones come with 2.2 already installed. Have read that all new ones have it already.

Telecom NZ are selling Defy's with preinstalled 2.2, however I bought mine about a month ago imported (through eking) and it was on 2.1. I think this would be the case with most imported defys.

However the 2.2 update was recently released for certain Asian regions so you may be able to update it after you receive it, which is what I did. It's possible that now that, depending on which region its being imported from, the importers would have them preinstalled with 2.2 before shipping. You should ask whoever you are planning to buy from.

Hey adida101,

Thanks for this:

I have a Motorola Defy bought from Eking and was able to successfully update it to 2.2 last week without any hassle. You need to use the Motorola Software Update service via your PC as it isn't available for an over the air update.

Direct download: https://rsddownload.motorola.com/download/Motorola_Software_Update.exe

I followed the on screen instructions and now I am rolling with 2.2. It totally rocks.

I tried watching TV3 On Demand and it worked... well it kind of worked. I takes almost the entire CPU to watch stuff and it is jerky but when you think about it, it's a phone for crying out loud. And a mid-range phone at that. Watching the Sons Of Anarchy will a computer experience till I buy a tablet, oh well, I'll live.

The speed increase and task managment that comes with Android 2.2 is the real bonus.

The Defy has always been good but now it is awesome.

Thanks again.

For anyone interested in winning a Defy, just saw on the tv show The Crowd Goes Wild, they and Telecom are giving away 2 Defys. All you have to do is like there facebook page and match up some faces, I think all the details will be on their Facebook page.

Fantastic! I'm glad my information was helpful to someone. I agree, the Defy is awesome!

Viewing flash content on Android is still in its early stages and can be jerky at times, but its usable and a hell of a lot better than not having it (*cough iPhone cough*)  Yes its amazing what you can do on your phone these days!

The next step is rooting and overclocking the CPU, that might significantly improve performance enough to make Sons of Anarchy on your phone an enjoyable experience ;)

I just rooted today and will probably overclock the CPU within the next few days, I'll let you know how it goes and whether performance improves!

I guess if you don't use Facebook you don't get a chance to do into the draw.. =P

Hi guys,

Just wondering what service providers you are with. I bought a Defy off Eking a few months ago also and have it on 2 degrees. I tried the same download link but when I plugged my phone in it said that there were no available updates...
Will this update only work if you are on a certain service provider?

Thanks,
Ed

Hi Ed

I'm with Vodafone, but the the update has nothing to do with the service provider you're using. It has to do with the region your phone's firmware is.

As you bought it from Eking it's probably an Asian firmware. Unfortunately Motorola has temporarily pulled off the update for certain Asian countries, for reasons still unknown. Typical Motorola...

See here:
https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/50132

So I guess those of us who did manage to update got lucky. I guess you just have to wait for Motorola to re-release it. I'm sure the update will be available again soon... But you never know =/

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.

I thought that would be the case that it would be irrelevant of the service provider, I just thought it was unusual that others had got it working on Eking phones. I'm pretty sure my Defy has Chinese firmware, or some sort of Chinese software on it. It had a lot of bloatware that came from a site called hiapk.com
For reference, if anyone else is having trouble with this, my APflex version is:
GAS_EMEA_USAJORDANRTGB_P035

Build number:
JRDNEM_U3_2.51.1_hiapk

I will update here if I have any luck in the future with this.
Cheers,
Ed

Hmmm that's definitely not the same build number and APflex version as my phone was before the update.. I guess eking sell phones from a number of different firmwares, which is probably the reason some of us could update while you couldn't. The 'hiapk' suggests honk kong to me. Just have to be patient I guess =/ (or flash a ROM yourself)

Ok I just rooted and let me tell you, its the easiest thing I've done in terms of modifications.. ever.
If you're willing to take the plunge (I doubt that 12 month warranty from eking actually counts for anything Tongue out) I recommend using SuperOneClick root method.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682

Just download "SuperOneClickv1.9.1-ShortFuse.zip" from the link provided. Don't worry about the 'drivers' file above it. Then just follow the instructions in the video on the first post of that thread.

I also overclocked to 1Ghz using SetVsel, an app from the market specifically for the Defy, and it definitely seems like things like flash on the web browser are a lot smoother. Not sure if it's just my imagination though. In any case I can now watch a show from TVNZ on demand in medium quality perfectly smoothly.
Also remember to download the Adobe Flash 10.3 update from the marketplace! Supposed to improve performance of the flash player even more.

Hey, thanks for the information.

I'll probably get with rooting and possibly overclocking my phone this weekend.

Do I need to reload my apps when it is done?

Nope, you don't lose any data. It takes literally 3 mins to do and the only thing it does is give you access to the files stored directly on your phone, rather than only on your SD card (which is all that un-rooted users have access to).

Finally decided to order a Defy, $429 from eKing... Could of gotten it a little cheaper ealier in the week but still $40 then they were a couple of weeks back. Hard to decide which of the dodge Parallel importers were most trustworthy.
