Out of interest, when the issue occurs are you still able to browse the internet on the SG II
Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.
Yes, internet access is unaffected, it's just the hotspot on the phone that crashes - i.e. it actually comes up in an error state on the phone when you try to disable it after it has dropped out.
And I just retested browsing from the phone and browsing definitely still worked after I'd turned on the WiFi hotspot and after the hostpot had crashed. Interestingly, the crash is now taking a few minutes after connecting from my laptop - it was a few seconds when I was trying back in December. I wonder if there's been a Windows update that has changed the dynamics in some subtle way.
I also tried following saenglish's suggestion of talking to the Samsung Help Desk - but they were anything but helpful. Not interested in even letting me finish describing the problem, said the phone had to be sent to Telegistics before they would do anything. When I started to describe others' experiences described on Geekzone I was quite rudely cut-off with the comment that they don't take any notice of anything written on the internet - they don't read it and they don't comment on it. I can understand why they treat online sources with scepticism, but not why they train their help desk staff to treat their customers like idiots.
Just had a call from someone else at Samsung - very helpful and definitely taking the issue seriously and proposing a very sensible approach to pinning down the issue.
Factory reset. No reason but why not - don't have any data to lose. Now can get www while wifi tethering on phone. Oops I.e. phone browses..
Other devices connect and can ping the hotspot but no browsing. Took dog for a walk, and had a thought. Got back, sure enough default apn only had a type of internet+mms. Added dun and now surfing away again on the tablet.
First go with tablet and two win 7 machines actually lasted 5 minutes. Now back to the more normal 3 seconds before tethering breaks.
Can now confirm along with rjl that the gs2 can browse with wifi tethering on both when it is in a working state and a broken state so I am pleased that we are on the same page with that.
Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.
Excellent - I was about to try removing that dun setting from my apn to see if I could get the same behaviour as you - so we're thinking along the same lines.
I'm just experimenting with my partner's Galaxy Y (which is on Android 2.3.6). Will see what happens if I swap SIMs with her (which is one of the things Samsung wanted to get us to try at a Telecom shop (but with another Galaxy S II).
Has there been any update on the issue at all? I can only use the hotspot on the phone with a grotty old USB 802.11b wifi stick and not the laptops inbuilt wifi.
Hi not fixed but we do have a small amount of traction with Samsung and Telecom. I urge you to add your voice by contacting them and explain that you too cannot wifi tether with win 7.
I got it to work (well sort of). I'm using the tethered connection to type this reply.
I'm not sure if this is a solution or if everyone knew of this solution!
I rooted my phone (yea i went that far) Downloaded Barnacle Wifi tether (the google one didn't work either) Didn't change any settings (loads of setting you can change on it - really can play around if you want to)
And now it works - Got 1.5 Mbps download
I can send the setting for barnacle if anyone wants them.
I understand this isn't exactly a solution as i rooted the phone but i'm happy that it works now!
Was in at the Telecom shop, just to keep them up to date with the fact that it still isn't fixed. They gave me a demo phone to test. With my sim the same results. Best result was 15 seconds before the wifi hotspot stopped. More common was 3 seconds
Exactly the same blue error message.
Also have looked at the traffic being sent using wireshark, this led to turning off things like Skype and then led to working in safe mode. Managed to get about 3 minutes of useful hotspot. Still leaves me in the same position. Windows7 issue, galaxy s2 problem.
Not really. If you are going to say that your device you are selling me is a wifi access point then it has to deal with most if not all reasonable device in the wild. At this point 3 different windows 7 machines including one fresh install and two different phones. Only things that have not changed are the version of windows, all the same enterprise version and my sim card. Also it is the Samsung hotspot that breaks not the windows mashines trying to work with it.
I have no trouble believing that other people will not see this problem, that is why I was happy to look at the apps on my phone, in the end all apps have now been removed by telegistic, and to look at what programs on my windows machine may be an issue, hence the safe mode attempt and the fresh install on a brand new machine
Anyway I just want to keep working with Telecom and Samsung for a favourable outcome.
