jeffnz: I usually do it for first time on a new rom definately if going from Sammy Rom to AOSP or CM as it clears away any trace of previous system files so have no issues.

I also use Advanced recovery to restore data that works well but not sure its a good thing if changing to AOSP or CM but if you have backup its easy to change.

Have a look at Pacman as well its a mix of AOSP, Paranoid android and CM. it has some cool features like Holo but not the problems that Paranoid Android have What I've done is keep a backup of that and when I want to try a CM or AOSP I restore that backup and then just flash the Rom in question as it saves doing full wipe. Then the reverse if you want to go back to Sammy based Rom but try the advanced restore of data only.

I also have Nova Prime Launcher and once its restored via Titanium backup it restores my home screens back to normal.

I switch between Nova and Buzz launcher. Buzz is brilliant, some amazing themes on there that get downloaded automatically and you can download a number of different components and create your own set up.

Yah I wouldn't wipe within versions of the same ROM Provider unless it's a major release.. So Example. If I was going from Wanamlite 6.7 to 6.8 I wouldn't wipe, if 6.7 and 6.8 were both based on 4.2.2, but if 6.7 went to 7.0 and Android version went 4.2.2 to 4.3 I would wipe. Chances are I would wipe if I went from Wanam Rom to Omega ROM. It's not mandatory, however if you have issues, you would wipe before asking for support as remnants of the prior ROM might exist and conflict.

What about from stock to a custom rom?

I've tried Ktweaker for a few days and Adam kernel for less, but I'm a huge fan of Ausdim's kernel for TW and GE rom's (not for AOSP ones!!!). Link to XDA thread.

Really happy with this Kernel. Running it with a de-bloated, de-odexed MGA stock rom (XDA link here).  I've got 2 exchange accounts syncing and can get just under 5hrs screen time before hitting the 5% warning.

I am torn, but yes I think it's sensible, even though it's a pain. I am doing it this weekend, and haven't decided, but 75% likely I will.

So couldnt resist flashed JB 4.2.2 PA3.68 [AOKP][CM10.1]P.A.C True All in 1 ROM last night.

Flashed was smooth. Only problem I am having is camera is not working with flash (icon is greyed out) Looking into that issue.

Kind of miss some of the samsung apps like S - health. Other wise Rom is smooth.

Will try it for a week and see how it goes.

After months of deciding I finally got a black mist S4 on Telecom today. Got a good interest free deal (was going to buy it outright but sure I'll have interest free!), put it on the $39 plan for 24 months and got the phone for $750. Decided it wasn't worth importing, GST, customs, shipping, warranty, and subsidy tipped me in favour of walking down the road. Got the insurance in case I broke it too, since my home policy excess is set very high.

Any tips/tricks for new owners appreciated :) Borrowed an S3 for a month, and have had an Android tablet for years, but my phone has been a Nokia for years.

Thanks Krullos, much appreciated.

Can anyone suggest apps to do the following?
- Alarm clock (does it have one built in?)
- Put it into flight mode between set times (overnight)
- Turn off mobile data, WiFi, and GPS (some or all) when the screen is off. I use "Auto Airport" on the tablet, but one flaw is if you turn it into flight mode, turn the screen off, then turn it back on, it turns the WiFi back on.
- General battery saving stuff - it was a pain to charge all the time when I had the S3. I generally don't need any data or GPS service when the screen is off - I will use it mostly like a regular phone.

Of course it has an alarm clock, Built into most handsets since 1994 the handset also has a batt saving mode,
