Choices are great;  Customizing it in such a way that people can't get the latest versions\updates without waiting weeks\months for those to be tested and customized is not great. We have 3 android devices in our house and I love them all, but this is an issue.

ATTENTION:

I have ordered a Google Nexus 8G tablet,  have decided I want a 16G and send to different address, but can not change my order.

Therefore I want to sell my existing pre-order at cost.  My current cost so far are:
in USD.

Nexus 7 8G $199, Tax (CA) $17.41, Delivery to US address $13.99,  Total: $230.40 USD

I expect shipping fees and insurance to NZ to be around $50 USD more or less.

So that would be around $280 USD.

Anyone interested I will email a copy of my pre order.

I would expect say $100 NZD deposit and the rest when unit received.

I am located in Auckland, Ponsonby, email: twobikes22@gmail.com

Do you have a US credit card? If not, what workaround did you use?

This "fragmentation" meme is out of control.

They buy the one that suits.

I disagree. I've used many different linux distros over the last ten years, and updating them was always trivially easy. The same is not true of Android, sadly. To jump from Gingerbread to ICS, or now from ICS to JB, should be a matter of user choice, and the user should not be forced to root their phone if they want to do something as basic as update their OS. The variety of UIs overlaid onto the stock Android OS are not the issue, the reluctance and sluggishness of the vendors to update them is.

As a result, users may not "buy the one that suits", they may buy a less-favoured device simply because it has a later OS. That's a restriction of choice, not an expansion of it.

android is getting better and better

The Android OS may be getting better but until Google demand every OEM uses stock standard versions of Google, and stops heavily customising it, the fragmentation in the Android world is only going to get worse.

Every recent model Android phone should be able to upgrade to ICS. Right now that isn't the case, and until Google follow the Apple model where IOS updates can be immediately be applied to every device I have to say overall things are getting worse, not better.

Even if OEM's want to continute customising their own version of the OS, the ability to use a stock standard Google version of Android allowing users to run the latest OS should be a basic core capability of any Android device.

Please don't cure "fragmentation" because when you do you've killed choice.

Choice is what makes Android better. If I wanted limited choice and to be dictated to by a vendor I'd go buy an iPhone or a WinPhone.

Agreed!

Here's the thing: It is entirely the users choice, not right, to buy whichever phone that suits within their affordability. Users claim rights about devices that aren't rights at all.

Within the Android platform there are a myriad of choices. At the Apple platform there are less.

Both work to a point for their users choices.

Off topic, but for the life of me I can not figure out how to reply to a specific post and have that post in text box in reply.

It will most likely be blazingly obvious when someone points it out to me.

That's great, thanks to your reply I found out about their assisted purchase option. Even with their fees, shipping and insurance, the total comes in under $400 NZ, that's good news.

How much was their assisted purchase fee?

My Nexus 8G I am willing to sell at cost which I expect will come to $370 NZD at current exchange rates.

No sure absolutely on shipping cost as some put their item in ridiculously oversize boxes and have to be re boxed by shipito to minimize postage cost.

I remember my Nexus One phone from google came in a box 3 times the size it needed and as such I could have gotten the shipping cost cut in half if I had know and got shipito to re box.

$8.50, in addition to their $8.50 on-shipping fee. Thanks too, for the warning reminder about reboxing. Hopefully Google's not as bad as Amazon, who like to ship a USB stick in a box big enough for an SUV.

Plus 4.3% paypal/CC PLUS 8% purchase cost fees, was getting excited for a minute there
