dafman:
Does Google offer option this for app developers?
It's called "in-app purchases"
Cheers!

I'm actually also on the side of "I paid for the previous ad-free version and have a reasonable expectation that an update should continue that option". Perfectly happy to pay to have an ad-free latest version, but please don't impose ads on me, when I previously paid for a version without.
As far as the interface and options go - radically different to previously, but I'm warming to it. It's just different.
(Edited for clarity)
Who blanket overwrites a (paid) ad-free app with an ad supported version.
Release a new ad supported version, fine. Grandfather the old, sure. But don't force a swap from one to the other.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.
OOOHHHH HYPERFIBRE!

Flightradar24 narrowly avoided this case. Thankfully they grandfathered the paid app, leaving it in store - it'll keep working (for now) ad free, but updated the previously limited free version to include additional features the others now lack, added ads and include subscription login to unlock further.
Re introducing an in-app paid option to remove ads - something we have not yet discounted, but it's early days so let's see how things go.
Re having paid for an app with no ads and now getting ads - if you downloaded recently, we have a refund option available: http://blog.metservice.com/New-MetService-App-FAQs - and if you paid for the app years ago, we'd like to think you got value for your sub-$3 purchase over that time.

I agree about the widget 4x1 is needed. I have a nexus 6 but even with the bigger screen 4x2 just takes up too much room.
I quite like the app but as I have to take so many things off the front screen for now I will revert to yr.nor app.
Will keep an eye on development.
afe66:
Could there also be a 4x1 widget like previous version as the 4x2 takes up too much space.

Hi,
I see the ratings tumbling on playstore for the new metservice app, lots of 1 star ratings coming in.
People questioning whether it is the right thing to do for a company especially state owned to charge users for an app ad free then turnaround later and force a new app onto them with adverts.
I am not a fan of the new version, the adverts + the layout. Old version was clean and fast.
I don't suppose anyone has .APK of the old version?
Cheers
It was a under-$3 purchase. I did mine years ago so that paid for itself many times over. People complaining about the $3 then turning around and buying their overpriced flat-whites are being hypocrites.
I think I paid, ads free version should be available. I rather pay for something with the option of not seeing ads.

I'd pay again for an Ad free version.
I was keeping an open mind until trying it out and must say that, while the interface is slicker, in many ways I'd still prefer to keep the old app (and agree it would have been preferable if they'd released this as a totally new app, not an update to an existing one).
Most annoying thing - it seems SO much slower to load information when first opening the app; I also do dislike the requirement to sometimes have to close down a full-screen ad upon opening the app, as opposed to seeing the information.
I also preferred the functionality of the old app to flick right for the next days' weather, as opposed to different locations' weather (and also miss the background images). I do, however, like the inclusion of sun and moon info; that's one less app I'll need on my phone.
Like many here, I'd be happy to fork out a few bucks for an ad-free version, as I did for the original app, even if it required an annual sub... Particularly as the ads are more in-your-face than I'd hoped.
