jol:

Kogan/Dick Smith have just opened up pre-orders. Pixel 3 is NZ$1339 (64GB) and NZ$1479 (128GB). Pixel 3 XL is NZ$1479 (64GB) and NZ$1649 (128GB).

Does anyone have any experience with them? Those numbers include GST, right (they won't be held up at the border)?

Sounds promising!

+1 to jol's comment. Reading their warranty information it sounds like they offer their own warranty (rather than the manufacturer warranty) and the only really concerning clause I noticed was:

Dick Smith Group reserves the right to replace the Product or relevant part with the same or equivalent Product or part, rather than repair it. Where a replacement is provided, Dick Smith Group reserves the right to replace the Product or relevant part with the same or equivalent Product or part, rather than repair it. Where a replacement is provided, Dick Smith Group will determine, in its discretion, the closest Product within the then current range of Products offered by Dick Smith Group with which to replace the faulty or damaged Product. The replacement Product may differ with the replaced Product in size and specifications, at the reasonable election of Dick Smith Group. Dick Smith Group may replace parts with refurbished parts. Replacement of the Product or a part under the Standard Care Warranty or Extended Care does not extend or restart the Standard Care Warranty or Extended Care period.

Dick Smith (Kogan) does sound pretty promising! Not sure how their prices are so cheap, do they not have to pay all the duties and GST importing to NZ?

I've tried so hard to settle for a (much cheaper) OP 6T or Huawei P20 pro, but it's so hard to go past the features of the Pixel 3 (computational raws, wide angle front camera, consistently good photos).

Out of interest why go for the XL over the Pixel 3? Is the bigger battery and screen really worth that notch and $140?

You've still got to pay for delivery on top of those prices remember...

NVM....Looks like delivery is only gonna be around $10 extra.

Delivery cost (without freight protection) came out at $10.83 to Dunedin... pretty good compared to shipping from the US via YouShop or BigApple.

Yeah, just saw that.  Pretty good price compared to the other options we have in NZ right now.  I'm going for the Pixel 2 XL though - with all the software from the 3 XL there's not a huge difference (apart from the screen?) and this way I can save myself $600-$700 and use it for the Pixel 4 XL at the end of next year.

I like your thinking @hadenkose. Pixel 2 XL even has the same ram as Pixel 3, but the 30% faster CPU is appealing for me as I upgrade phones very infrequently and while it's not a noticeable difference now, it will be in 3 years. Then there's the wide angle front camera which looks very useful for getting photos with my kids without getting someone else to take them.

Where have you found a Pixel 2 XL for that cheap? I think the cheapest I've seen it is still about $1000?

I'd love to get the 3XL, but it's a bit too much for me at the moment.  I paid those sort of prices for my Note 8 last year!  It was supposes to be my phone for a couple of years.  Unfortunately, I really missed the whole Google ecosystem (I had the Nexus 6P before that and the Nexus 5 and 4 before that).  It has made me realise why I went way from Samsung all those years ago!  Don't get me wrong, it's still a great phone and the screen is awesome, but I just want stock android and a phone that isn't deemed obsolete by the manufacturer after only 6 months.

Dick Smith have a black 128GB Pixel 2 XL for $949.  That's the cheapest new one I've found.  I really like the panda one though, which DS is selling for $1049.  I might even spend another $100 and get it in NZ at Parallel Imported.  Failing that, I could just get the black version and put a black and white skin on the back :-)

I use a pixel 2 for work and a Note 9 personally which I recently upgraded from Note 8. I am not sure what you mean by obsolete after 6 months. The Note 8 just received the November security patch which is the latest. Yes its not on Android pie however still updated security wise and by no means is the performance hampered by being on Oreo. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. There are some things I love doing on my pixel however there are somethings done best on the note.

By obsolete, I mean that by the time the the next Galaxy S model is released, the OS updates are put into show motion. The Note 9 might fare a bit better because of project treble... But my note 8 didn't get Oreo until after the S8 earlier this year. Yes it has the November security update, but this is an exception. It's usually 1 to 2 months behind on that regard. I always enjoyed the latest and greatest updates in my N6P. It's all about personal preference, and I definitely prefer stock Android over Samsung.

I'm certainly going to see if I can physically find one to look at in Sydney at the end of the month.

Obviously there would be no delivery costs, since I would simply be putting it my pocket. There are 3 JB Hi Fi shops in the city area so if I bought it there, it sounds like warranty in NZ would be possible.

Not sure I want to spend the money but I shall certainly have a look.

If you buy it and bring it back yourself you can also use the TRS (Tourist Refund Scheme) to claim back the Australian GST.

Not that it would apply here as it isn't sold, but you can do that with quite a lot of things here in NZ if you have them shipped to the airport to collect as you leave. I did it with a Rolex I bought my wife and it saved thousands in GST.

So my friend from Melbourne had his trip back to NZ this weekend and I feeling have a Pixel 3! Along with the Pixel Stand, and a Caseology clear case (waterfall) and tempered glass screen protector from Amazon.

Loving it so far, currently in the throes of new phone bliss. It feels really premium (oh irony of covering it all up after unboxing), it's really responsive and the camera seems great so far! The next few days will be spent getting it just right now.

As a reminder, I got this one by buying online at JB HiFi Australia and having it delivered to a friend in Melbourne to bring back when he came over for a friend's wedding.

Congrats Dionasaurus! How much in extra fees (GST, customs levy etc) did your friend end up having to pay to bring the phone in?

You will find it at Sydney Airport, there is a small JB HI Fi there, I almost bought it and was contemplating offering this to Geekzoners but chickened out as too much risk of paying duty/custom fees if I have a few Pixel 3 boxes in my carry on :D
