Geekesque: To all who are considering updating their Galaxy 5 Tab.

I have been following this thread since February, considering whether or not to 'Hack' my phone to get 2.2 onto it. Being an amateur geek I didn't attempt flashing it. Today reading this post I found out that a new Kies was available and that NZ Telecom had released its 2.2. Consequently I downloaded Kies, and the program suggested a firmware upgrade. Although the upgrade did not explicitly say 2.2 I installed it. As a safeguard I removed my SD and Sim cards before the upgrade and I back-upped all my info. Long story short I'm currently running 2.2 on my phone. It is so much nicer than 2.1 and I'm so pleased. If anybody is worried that they cannot update their phone simply or without bugs Then stop worrying, If I can do it so can you.

Updated my wife's phone a couple of days ago using Kies. No worries at all, while I backed up the data everything was still there after, didn't have to touch a thing so it was all sweet.

One thing I will comment on though is that when I first tried using a Vista business laptop the install would just 'hang'. My old lappy with XP though ran it no worries. It was also recommended to undock the memory card before running the update.

2.2 is much nicer to use and the phone generally has a fresh feel about it with much better performance.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I updated mine a couple of days ago and now have a much less useful phone :(

1. Now very fussy to connect to my macbook wifi

2. compass is screwed i.e "Backcounty Navigator" maps don't orientate (others had reported compass issues).

3. GPS takes about 4 or 5 mins to lock (took about 30 seconds before)

4. Have had one coma and had to remove battery to reboot

Have done a factory reset and above issues were all still present before I did any configuring or re installing of apps.

Going by this experience, my advice would be... "if it aint broke, don't fix it"

Mine has been great !
I cant find any downside so far. I will check the GPS tho to make sure its all good.

Yep, my compass is still screwed post-update; I'm amazed Telecom went ahead with a release that still hadn't fixed this (over the version of 2.2 others have installed).

Has no-one else had a general slow-down in the phone either? The lag can now be chronic.

I also have had problems with the Gmail app since upgrading - emails would take ages to arrive and be sent. Seemed to have managed to fix this following some suggestions elsewhere (appears to have happened with many phones in upgrading to 2.2).

I reset my phone again and all seems much better (compass still out though).

This time I did the reset without the sim card installed (don't know if that's important or not).

Can anyone help me to get any version of official Telecom NZ firmware?
I think many people looking for NZ firmware as well. :)

There are 2 ways to backup firmware.

1. backup firmware from KIES upgrade process

I'm sure this way will work.
just need to rename *.tar.md5 to *.tar
so can flash with Odin.

2. found this instruction from below link but I'm not sure this way will work or not.

1. Root phone using Universal AndRoot,
2. Turn on USB Debugging in Applications -> Development
3. Run one line at a time using Android SDK or ADB ToolBox by MAD Team (Can be found in ROM Archive).

su (you should see a superuser prompt on phone, press yes)
dd if=/dev/stl12 of=/sdcard/system.rfs bs=4096
4. The system.rfs in your sdcard is the backup.
5. To compile into ODIN package:
a. Open terminal in Linux.
b. Navigate to folder of backup.
c. run "tar -H ustar -c system.rfs >ODIN.tar" without the quotations. P.S. do not rename system.rfs or else will not work.
d. Your done.

original 2.1 update-1 for GT-I5503T

you gotta data wipe first before you flash this or it'll corrupt your phone.

Mine is still going mint as per scuwp's instruction. No need to do anything dodgy. Increased battery life and speed is the main plus.

UPDATE.

I flashed with TNZ firmware from chodedelode. (Thanks for uploading the rom file)

1. flashed with 2.1 USA firmware.
2. factory reset
3. flashed with TNZ firmware from chodedelode
4. factory reset

I could see TNZ logo and looks working fine but not 100%
couldnot be recognized from KIES (This version of the device cannot be updated.) - so couldn't update to TNZ froyo.

I guess still need CSC.rfs, Boot.img, amss, recovery.img. not only system.rfs.

so if someone going to update, plz get firmware from KIES and upload here please.

Bugger, I was hoping this would work for ya (I was gonna give it a go). Can't actually imagine why it wouldn't since I thought it would be the same as flashing the early update.

Hello folks

I've just come across this thread and realised there is an official update from Telecom to Froyo for the i5503T, my issue is even after downloading the latest version of KIES it doesnt tell me there are any updates for my phone. It's running 2.1-update1 build ere27. Any ideas? KIES seems to run and connect fine, I can browse media etc but can't do anything related to firmware.

I'm eager to update to get my calender to sync and sort some wireless issues.
