ThomasW: Finally decided to order a Defy, $429 from eKing... Could of gotten it a little cheaper ealier in the week but still $40 then they were a couple of weeks back. Hard to decide which of the dodge Parallel importers were most trustworthy.

Good on ya ;) Don't worry you should be all good with eking. If you've got any problems they have a physical store on Wakefield St and the guy there is pretty helpful.

Well, I caved in and got one too. I gave the mrs the 2x as it was a bit big for my work - the defy suits the purpose. She had a nokia too, so more than pleased to have the LG :)
The physical size of the defy plus its rugged nature certainly suit more active work.

Infotech had the best pricing and physical store, but I see the price is heading back up again.

So far:

Rooted with superoneclick (easy!)

Update to 2.2.2 via https://rsddownload.motorola.com/download/Motorola_Software_Update.exe

Updated flash player

Running droidwall to cut down data usage

setvsel to reduce voltage and up cpu speed

Install Wheresmydroid

The result is a great fast little phone. Loving it!

One difference I do miss, is that the 2x has an option to filter contacts to only show those with phone numbers - when your address book is generated by Gmail, then I see that as pretty useful.

I dont think there was a region selection for my update?
It just detected 2.1 and then installed 2.2.2

I have to say I used the Motorola Defy for a week while in the US... Although not the fastest of the handsets around, I have to say it was quite nice to use it. The main reason is its size and weight. It helped a lot having a light handset to carry around during a week long conference.

I wouldnt pay the $800 that telecom expect - but imported prices are more realistic (especially as on 2deg anyway)

Once its overclocked, speed improves a bit.
Using Quantum, the defy (@1200) registers 1580 whereas the 2x clocks 2550

I know I am risking getting the job of chief Defy cheerleader. But it does seem Motorola has done a great job of making a good mid-range Android phone. I would say this is probably the hardest job to do at present for a phone maker.

[When Nokia brings out it's first WP7 handset we will see how they got on with the hardest job in phone making there will ever be, but that's another thread]

Yeah, there are phones with bigger screens, faster processors, better cameras, fruit based logos on the back... blah blah... But they all cost twice the price of a Defy without giving twice the phone.

The mid-range Android market is also totally crowded with ho hum phones. Making something that can stand out from this crowd, but has a price point people will buy is damn hard.

But what Motorola have done is make a good phone that can be sold for a good price. That adds up to a great experience.

I have to agree, but

What Motorola have done is make a good phone that can be sold for a good price that is also waterproof.

Sounds like the words of experience from someone who has put their previous phone through the wash? :)
Come to think of it, the misses did it to one of her old phones too. Perhaps it was a mistake handing over the 2X ....

Only dunked one phone, was canoing at the time, got it out to tell the time when my mate destabilized the Canoe. I instinctively adjusted my posture to counterbalance the wobble only to plunge my phone hand into the water....

Phone survived, but the little sound reviver died. Could only use it for texting or to listen to people who call me. Used the phone for about a year after that before replacing with a Sony K800i. But I spent a lot of time on the water either Fishing, Kayaking or whatever and a waterproof phone is great peace of mind. I would be able to take it with me out fishing rather then leaving it in the car, or hidden away in waterproof bags.

Righto, I'm sold. Defy it is.

If I buy from Eking, will I need to purchase a power adapter to charge the phone, and is this something D Smith would have on the shelves? Is there anything else worth mentioning when purchasing from E king or similar offshore distributors?

They should supply an adaptor, however they use micro usb to charge anyway. Typically youll leave it hooked up to the PC and wouldnt need one

Definitely wouldn't pay the $800. The Glass on the screens is really prone to breaking.

Both my mate and my brother have owned them for just over a month. My brothers one broke this week, it fell from his pocket onto a wooden floor. Screen smashed.

Mates one didn't even fall, he just had it in his pocket and it cracked

Have given motorola a call on their behalf. WOn't be fixed. So had to order a new digitiser for one and a new screen + digitiser for the other.

Really not good though. Anyone else had any issues with their screens? Ie. scratches or breaking from small heights?

There is a class action lawsuit going on about it in the states, but I don't think I'll get them to join up. Will just fit the replacement parts for them and hope that it doesn't happen again...

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

I would confirm that what you want is in stock by email or phone call before you place the order and hand over credit card numbers.

Also remember the phone is getting delivered by a courier who needs a signature, you may consider giving your work address as the delivery address.

That would be about it.

Thats why I prefer a physical store like Expert infotech that have them in stock.

I havent read they are any more prone than other similar phones - Im not keen to find out how hardy they are by dropping it though :)
