jeffnz: I'm on 4.2.2 so not sure if there was an update but expect there was. Its ver 4.2 so the application manager tells me.

Probably multiple updates, I'll give it a shot tonight

tilde: you
don't have to remove the default sms client. you can just set go sms
pro to be default, either as a one time only or permanently until you
decide otherwise.i use a very much older version of go sms pro,
with the ability to backup SMS/MMS to local rather than cloud. i've
found the newer versions with too much adware and bloat features that
i've never used.

Thanks for the info. I didn't get SMS Pro because it looked too much like a cartoon, and free apps usually have some kind of drawback. I prefer to pay for good apps and not have advertising and such.

I'm quite liking tasker. There's a bit of a learning curve, even though I'm a developer (well I was, architect now) it's not totally intuative. Aiming to do simple things like change volume to low when I'm at work (it'll know based on cell sites), turn GPS on when I run maps then off again afterward, flight mode at night (I don't care if people are calling me, I'm sleeping).

Two things I want to be able to do that I haven't figured out so far - anyone know how?:
- Turn GPS and mobile data on once an hour between 8am and 4pm weekdays, do a general sync. If WiFi is turned on then don't do it. This is in case I lose my phone as I have data off most of the time.
- Between 10pm and 7am turn the built in SMS app to quiet, and only allow phone calls from set people, others go to voicemail.
- Change my SMS notification tone based on location (I can do the location bit, just not the changing app settings).

For the GPS and mobile data once an hour thing you could alternatively install Cerberus which you can then use to remotely turn your GPS and data on (by sending your phone an SMS) should your phone be lost/stolen. It can do lots of other cool stuff too - take a picture, wipe the sd card, etc.

I already have Cerberus, never looked at the SMS option though, thanks for pointing it out. Can it turn GPS and data on?

I'd still like to do the hourly thing, I want to do things like check a few email accounts, sync facebook, sync calendar etc.

You can control Cerberus remotely through the website www.cerberusapp.com or via SMS messages from another phone. The following commands are available (remember to replace *password* with your actual password, also remember that the password is case-sensitive):

cerberus password wipe (to wipe your device memory)
cerberus password wipesd (to wipe the SD card)
cerberus password lock code (to lock your device with a password, replace *code* with the lock code you desire)
cerberus password unlock (to unlock your device)
cerberus password alarm text (to display a message and play a loud alarm, replace *text* with the message you want to be displayed)
cerberus password takepicture (to take a picture and send it to your email address, the front camera will be used if available)
cerberus password enabledata (to enable data access on your device)
cerberus password message text (to display a message, replace *text* with the message you want to be displayed)
cerberus password startemergency hours (to make the device send its location periodically, replace *hours* with the number of hours from one alert to the next)
cerberus password stopemergency (to stop emergency mode, the device will stop sending its location periodically)
cerberus password call number (to call a phone, replace *number* with the phone number you want to call, or don't write a number to make Cerberus call the sms sender)
cerberus password screenshot (to grab a screenshot and send it to your email address)
cerberus password enablewifi (to enable WiFi and automatically connect to open networks)
cerberus password capturevideo (to capture a video and send it to your email address)

Yeah I just found that thanks, I'll have a play tonight. I'll also try to convert it to a system app so it survives a device wipe and can activate the GPS.

Anyone by chance have a tripod I could borrow that I could mount my S4 on to take a video. I'd like to borrow it for a week if at all possible. I am in Auckland. I am happy to pay freight in both directions

How are you going to mount a phone on a tripod? Cameras have a screw thread on them, you'd need some kind of a cradle... or duct tape.
