Anyone know how you can tell if possible, what input the S4 is getting whilst it's charging? I want to verify that the special port on my desktop computer which provides more than the standard amount of power, is indeed supplying more power? Same with my Car Charger which is rated at 2.1a but I am sure isn't any faster than the 1a charger I was using before.

Batteries can only take power so quickly. 2 hours is the recommended minimum for NiMH batteries, LiIon is a bit shorter but it depends on the cell.

From BatteryUniversity

The charge rate of a typical consumer Li-ion battery is between 0.5 and 1C in Stage 1, and the charge time is about three hours. Manufacturers recommend charging the 18650 cell at 0.8C or less. Charge efficiency is 97 to 99 percent and the cell remains cool during charge. Some Li-ion packs may experience a temperature rise of about 5ºC (9ºF) when reaching full charge. This could be due to the protection circuit and/or elevated internal resistance. Full charge occurs when the battery reaches the voltage threshold and the current drops to three percent of the rated current. A battery is also considered fully charged if the current levels off and cannot go down further. Elevated self-discharge might be the cause of this condition.

NB: 1C means charge a 1000mah battery at 1000mah current. 0.5C is charge it at 500mah.

Read that article for interesting information, like to prolong your battery life it's better not to fully charge it, and charge it while it's off. That means getting a wireless charging pad and putting it on and off throughout the day may actually be better for your battery than daily charges, though it wouldn't be off.

Simple Guidelines for Charging Lithium-based Batteries

  • A portable device should be turned off while charging. This allows the battery to reach the threshold voltage unhindered and reflects the correct saturation current responsible to terminate the charge. A parasitic load confuses the charger.

  • Charge at a moderate temperature. Do not charge below freezing.

  • Lithium-ion does not need to be fully charged; a partial charge is better.

  • Chargers use different methods for “ready” indication. The light signal may not always indicate a full charge.

  • Discontinue using charger and/or battery if the battery gets excessively warm.

  • Before prolonged storage, apply some charge to bring the pack to about half charge.

  • Over-discharged batteries can be “boosted” to life again. Discard pack if the voltage does not rise to a normal level within a minute while on boost.

Thanks for that, but it doesn't really answer my question. I want to know if it's possible from the phones software for it to tell me what voltage and amperage the powersupply currently connected is operating at.

@ timmmay:
Yes that is true in some cases, I personally use an app called Clean Master, it's very useful to clean cache, useless files/back ups and clean ram. Try it :)

screen off or screen on? and are you using the supplied cable or a generic one.  I have read there are physical differences with the supplied cable.
