I hear there are drawbacks without some Samsung stuff. I mentioned chrome should be left on, but the idea is to remove everything unnecessary or that can be installed via Google play.

trying out a GE Rom or AOSP/CM you really get to see what Samsung have in their roms and I for one miss a lot of it.
I think their roms are far too big anddo delete some and like the roms with aroma where you acn select what you want or not. I did see an app similar to the one you put Tim and was going to try it but never got around to it

What do you miss? (just out of interest).
The only thing I missed in the beginning was s-planner and the SMS app, both solved from the play store.
Personally I can't stand the CM roms... the camera never works properly (proprietary drivers?) and other little issues.
These are solved with the GE rom as they had access to all the drivers.

I'm getting a bit sick of two aspects of TouchWiz - that apps are separated into "downloaded" and "other". Some of my downloaded apps are in the "other" section, I think mostly apps that were in my google account before I got my phone. Is there any way to move apps from "downloaded" to "other".

The main reason it bothers me is the "downloaded" folder isn't sorted alphabetical. It's really annoying.

Is there any way to change this? Do I have to do something extreme like getting the Google edition ROM?

@networkn have you tried Pacman? its AOKP/AOSP/CM with a lot of features. Or Omegas for a Sammy Rom but its not much differant to Bobcat.

I ran Omega for S3 and Liked it, but Wanam became my default and I ran it for over a year. I'll have a look at both.

I'm still on bobcat as I'm liking the themeing and control in settings. I still like the simplicity of Wanam as his Rom is very good battery wise but since he only has the I9500 he is not doing a lot of work on the I9505 rom.

I used an S3 for 18 months, now had my S4 for about two months, with a month on a 4S (I've had an iPhone 5 work phone until a month ago)
And I'm a little underwhelmed. It seems very similar to my S3, is there something I'm missing. I've not dabbled in custom roms, though I'm tempted to do it to my S3 just to see the difference. Does anyone on here still use their (android) phone in the stock form?

The S4 actually turned me off touchwiz due to all the bloat. I ran Nova launcher until the GE ROM was released. Waiting for the Nexus 5 now, then the Mrs can have the S4 (if the N5 is any good).

I like the idea of improving my phone, however I also like the simplicity of having my phone just work. I've done most of the GUI tweaks to speed up the default ROM, I update it when the provider pushes out updates and they work. I've tweaked phones in the past (not Android) and computers and lots of other things....and now I'm somewhat hesitant to get into a situation where you are backing up data and reflashing this and that every other day to get or keep things working at their best with the latest tweak or trying to improve something that was working fine before you started :)

Still considering - like the idea of many of the custom roms, having something with less bloat and different - but also don't want a lot of hassle.

The only reason for a cudtom rom would be far superior battery life andvspeed

I've followed the Google Rom thread over at XDA Forums and if those are your priorities - it's probably the simplest and best there is.

better camera and software
full HD
25% more battery capacity
IR blaster
smartview/pause/scroll
increased CPU

what were you expecting? try an HTC One it looks different to S3

There's more "stock" google ones than that on XDA.
That's the only issue, finding one that hasn't been stuffed with too much.
