I havent read they are any more prone than other similar phones - Im not keen to find out how hardy they are by dropping it though :)

I brought mine to replace my Magic after I damaged the screen (and I often work outdoors). First time I've broken a screen, but I understand why it happens. Some folk just don't consider that a handset is not designed to be sat on or have the ground dropped on it.

Yeah I know what you mean :) i've never dropped either of my Galaxies...at least not yet in the couple of years I've had them.

But my brother was a bit peeved at it. He's a plumber by trade. Watched the advert on TV with them throwing it round, dropping it in the pool. Dropping it from head height onto the dance floor etc. If only there was a way to overlay the touchscreen into maybe polycarbonate then that'd be perfect...apart from it being really prone to scratches

Good to know that replacement screens and overlays aren't too expensive though

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

It's a great ad, but I don't recall seeing a disclaimer 'No phones were harmed in the making of this ad'

Yes, the marketing seems to talk it up more than it should. I wouldnt be any rougher on it than any other smart phone to be safe. We all know that such good intentions dont always work out that way :)

Spares seem to be between $50-$100 so quite doable if prepared to import them

yeah, in most cases just the digitiser is damaged so about $26NZD incl shipping, so that's all good.

Maybe I'll tell him to get an Otterbox case, just a bit strange that motorola are marketing it as a rugged phone. When it's in reality no where near as rugged as all the previous Sanyo/Motorola/Nokia rugged phones. Guess it's mostly to do with the larger touchscreen not being protected :(

Terms 'rugged' and 'waterproof' are always subject to user objectivity.

Externally the DEFY may not be as rugged as my old 5410 , but I expect it to perform similarly in wet and dusty environments. In fact its better because I can do soo much more with the device in those conditions (smart v candy - phone), so perhaps I use it more and in places/situations that are worse???.

If I wanted a more rugged device, that could take more drops, onto hard uneven surfaces, and handle better being sat and stood on, then I'd be looking elsewhere or adding an ottercase.

I've seen all sorts of phones fall out of all sorts of pockets into substances like water and wet concrete, and onto hard indoor and outdoor surfaces. The outcome for the hardware varies. You can't always change your work environment (or your hardware), but learning to put your phone into a pocket you can secure is the simplest fix.

My husband is really happy with his defy (XT version) BUT I have noticed the following:
he has 'adapted' to its quirks, i.e
- restarting randomly, like in the middle of the night!
- if you arent patient with it, i.e press a button a few times, it will crash and show the "M" symbol pulsing - he calls it 'packing a tanty'
-I guess these are the only majors I see as something that for $800 you shouldnt be seeing on a phone.
I did a factory reset and told him to put back his apps one by one in case it was one of them, didnt seem to change anything
its the MB525, is there anything you could suggest to maybe stop the restarts or the lagging? some sort of upgrade?
He loves his phone and is quite happy pandering to its needs, but would be nice if it wasnt so ruggidly precious...

I've decided to give MIUI (custom rom) a go on my defy yesterday. and what I could say is just wow!

camera works, have not tested gps yet... should be fine too. games are fine.

2100-2200 quadrant score :) dunnow how accurate it's...

and I have oldish defy with green lens.

Mines running 22/300 32/600 and 52/1000. Its stable as, no real need to get extreme with it.

It sounds like youve done the right things so far, if its unmodified and telecom plan, Id be back talking to them about warranty before getting too carried away?

If I buy from Eking, will I need to purchase a power adapter to charge the phone, and is this something D Smith would have on the shelves? Is there anything else worth mentioning when purchasing from E king or similar offshore distributors?

You need to purchase an NZ adapter if you want to charge from a wall socket, yes. I'm just using the one I had for my old iPod Touch, but any USB wall adapter should work so getting one from Dick Smith shouldn't be a problem. The only other thing worth mentioning is when I bought from eking the 2gb memory card that's usually bundled with the Defy had mysteriously disappeared.. Hmmmm. Also the ones from eking are non-motoblur devices, which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the user.

Got my Defy today from Eking, originally received a couple of crappy Chinese phones, contacted EKing and they reordered my Defy so due to the complications took a little longer but they were good to deal with the entire time and I have more confidence in them then I had before hand.

So had it charging most of the day and just started playing with it, had the sim card in upside down which confused me for a while... Going to take a while to figure it out, first to figure out how to stop it from turning off every few seconds....
