When you have to pay an absurd amount to get a known genuine one installed, or else risk phone repair kiosk people using dodgey ones or open it yourself and put in one that you are told is genuine but you have no real way to know it becomes more of a hassle. I can see that getting people to replace phones when battery life becomes crap is in their interests tho.

They should just make a good battery to start with. My last good brand smart phone I owned for four years didn't have any significant battery fade, and still lasted ages when I eventually gave it away.

Learn to look after your battery. Run a full discharge cycle for the first couple of uses, then never over charge - about three hours a day is all that is required. Overnight charging at 8+ hours every night will kill your battery in time.

i thought that was true of Ni-Cd batteries, but complete myth for new Li-Ion batteries

Agree. Memory issues are in the past

Li-Ion you charge to 100% then run down to almost dead the first few times. This is not for the battery its for the calibration of battery %. The iPhone battery (I assume the other manufacturers are same or similar) states that the battery will reduce from 100% capacity to 80% over 1000 charge cycles. A charge cycle is 1 full charge from near dead, or 2 half cycles, etc. It doesn't matter if you charge from almost dead to 100%, or when its at 50%, etc. Charge when it suits you. The iPhone, when charged to 100%, will trickle loss to 99%, then trickle top up to 100%, it wont overcharge. Its best to have the battery always alive rather than turn the device off, so the electrons are in frequent movement .

As a die hard iPhone user I have to say Samsung has stuffed royally.

There are 3 reasons I have ever considered changing to the dark side.

1, Removable battery/Battery life

2, expandable memory.

3, Price.

Not really, I am stating that in my opinion Samsung has changed what made them Samsung and the best reasons to change to them.

Yes Apple went bigger but, again in my opinion that was a positive, Samsung have removed good features, and in my opinion the best ones!

The only positive is the removal of the BS bloatware.

None of you reasoning add or subtract from the user experience which is generally what it's all about, Samsung still deliver on that regard, as a diehard apple user you will know better than most that removable battery and expandable memory are quite easy to live without (excluding cheaparses who don't buy appropriate capacity devices in the first place)

When Samsung thinks they can successfully compete in the marketplace without a Google based OS then that is when they have stuffed themselves royally

Again the above are reasons I (me, personally) would have changed for if the OS wasn't so laggy when I played with it last (S5). They are the points of difference. Yes I use my phone around the battery, and 99% of the time it is not an issue, I have a 64GB version to get around the storage issue and I pay a premium for it, but why change to Samsung to do the same thing?

There have been 5 generations of Samsung. Yet, you have not moved to Samsung? So I guess, it does not matter what they do with s6.

I must say it is weird to have this strong comment from a non-samsung user. If after 5 generations you have not moved to them, I doubt you will for the next 5 generations.

Just reading that the S6 is going to allow you to remove the bloatware (well most of it) without rooting the phone first.

Oh man, I just had a little play with the S6 Edge! I dont' plan on getting one, but man, it is really nice. As all the reviews have said, the screen is pretty stunning. Literally only had it for 5mins, so didn't get to play much. But it's impressive. If I didn't love my Note so much, I'd definitely get it.

How to charge LiIon batteries.

How to prolong the life of a LiIon battery.

Short answer, in an ideal world:
- Don't let it run really low or get to 100%.
- Turn the device off when charging (nice to do not essential, I don't).

In practice: charge it regularly rather letting it get to 5% then charging to 100%. Never fully discharge the battery.

Battery Universities recommendations:

A portable device should be turned off while charging. This allows the battery to reach the threshold voltage unhindered and reflects the correct saturation current responsible to terminate the charge. A parasitic load confuses the charger.
Charge at a moderate temperature. Do not charge below freezing.
Lithium-ion does not need to be fully charged; a partial charge is better.
Chargers use different methods for “ready” indication. The light signal may not always indicate a full charge.
Discontinue using charger and/or battery if the battery gets excessively warm.
Before prolonged storage, apply some charge to bring the pack to about half charge.
Over-discharged batteries can be “boosted” to life again. Discard pack if the voltage does not rise to a normal level within a minute while on boost.

I would disagree about the turn off thing. The device will be managing the battery voltage independant of any load on the cell while charging.

Perhaps some dumb flashlights and half baked products power the device off the cell while trying to charge it, but most battery and USB power controllers have the features to send power straight thru to the load when connected to USB.

I use the batterys in devices to suit me, so on a smart phone that is on charge when im at a desk or car or bedside and not using it (qi wireless if supported or USB cable if not or I need to charge it while its really low and I want to use it) - I got a fastcharge 2.0 adapter for the car which really helps.

2-3 cycles of full down to 30-40% per day would be the norm, sometimes never getting above 70% because im not driving far etc. When they get too crap, replace the cell. Screw babysitting the device just to prolong the life of a $30-40 genuine battery. That is why the S6 is a firm NO for me. I have a HTX one X that severely lost capacity in 8 months or so. Its glued together so even worse.

I don't turn it off either. This is advice from a very reputable website, the crowd who make the cells and chargers. Have a read of the linked articles.

Fifteen Spark stores around the country will have the phones on display, allowing customers to experiment with the S6 edge’s curved display, the high-res camera that opens in 0.7 seconds – and to hold the full-metal body in their hands.

Spark also announced the opening of pre-orders today, and to celebrate the occasion the first 200 Spark customers to pre-order online will receive two accessories designed to complement the features and style of the phone — an S6 Clear View Case and a Kenu Stance Tripod, worth over $100.

Spark GM Home, Mobile and Business Jason Paris said: “Since it was revealed at Mobile World Congress earlier in the year there has been a huge amount of hype about this phone, with near-universal praise in online reviews.

“Features like the outstanding camera and super-fast processor are of course vitally important, but we think the curved display and sleek new design are equally important for our customers. The S6 and S6 edge take smartphone style to a whole new level. Mr Paris also noted that Spark had opened up pre-orders for its Samsung customers a couple of days earlier than everyone else.
