No problems with mine.

Mine may have a fault earpiece then..

So if you run your finger over the earpiece you can feel something sharp? Mine's smooth with the earpies grill slightly recessed.

Yeah earpiece grill is slightly recessed and glass edge bit is sharp enough to cut (and has cut my wife's finger)

New model "Smart Prime 6" out yesterday(?). Extra $20 ($149 incl $29 prepay) but looks significantly better than the Smart 4:

8MP camera (vs 5)

5" x 720 HD screen (vs 4.5" x 480)

8GB memory (vs 4GB)

2500 AH battery (vs 1880)

Same weight

But still no ac wifi & no Band 28

Yes - that's the same phone this whole discussion has been about, out for a few weeks now. ;) It's marketed as the "Vodafone Smart prime" (no "6") in New Zealand.

Oops, my apologies. You are of course correct. I got sidetracked by a reference in an earlier post when I first read the topic ("... even including the $30 unlock fee it seems a pretty good phone for $129!"). Checked on the Vodafone website and found the $129 Smart 4. Should have looked more carefully at the thread topic!

No worries, all good. :) I really recommend heading into a store and checking it out, and the Vodafone Smart ultra too (there's another thread about that one here on Geekzone). Even if you're not wanting to buy it's interesting to know how much phone is now available for the price.

Just go onto the VF website https://www.vodafone.co.nz/help/mobile-phones/unlock/
Enter the IMEI number - its on the phones box it came in as well as inside the back cover
Put in a credit card, cost of $30
Write down the unlock code

Stick 2 degrees sim in phone
Turn it on, after it starts up it will ask for the unlock code
Enter the code
Bingo!

weetbix43: I have tried and tried to install the facebook app but I keep getting an error saying " unknown error code during application installation: "504 )

any ideas?

Got a smart prime for myself and the wife in the weekend and had this issue with both: finally figured out the fix

1. login to the play store.
2. update all apps on the phone
3. update google play services
4. reboot phone
5. install Facebook with no problems

Do all this on unlimited wifi of course cos it probably uses a bit of "internet"

:)

Having a few issues with Spotify not downloading cache over wifi and showing offline all the time, not sure if Spotify app or this phone.

Anyone else with similar issue?

On my Prime I've got an option for "On-body detection" under Settings > Security > Smart Lock. I've enabled this and it's pretty handy for when I'm out and about and using my phone, stops the phone from automatically locking itself all the time.

A colleague has bought a Prime and his phone doesn't have the "On-body detection" option. Everything else about the phone seems to be the same, just this one option is missing.

Are there different versions of this phone out in the wild?

Suggestions on how to get this option?

Both phones were bought from Vodafone shops, so shouldn't be an issue with parallel importing or anything like that.

Make sure you're both running the same version of Google Play Services and the Google app. If it still doesn't show up, it likely needs to be enabled server side by Google. There is only one NZ variant of Smart prime.

Now for my next question: I've noticed that I'm getting Chinese when I use various help options that open up the help in the Chrome browser. For example in the Play Store, if I tap the hamburger menu and then tap "About Google" I get a web page in Chinese. Same in Settings > Security > Smart Lock > Overflow Menu > Help. I'm sure it was coming up in English before.
