If you have somebody in Australia with a google account, it's worth noting that Google price match with 5 Australian retailers (Bunnings, Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi ,Officeworks and The Good Guys. In NZ we only have one - JBHiFi).

Last year I waited for the black friday deals on the google store (which I think ended up being the same as the pre-order deals) and then price matched a P7P with the JB HI-FI black friday deal. I ended up getting the phone from Google for $1099 after price match (RRP $1299) and also getting the $300 google store credit (which I put towards a set of Pixel Buds Pro and A-Series buds). From memory I think you have 30 days to claim any price match (their standard return policy timing). And for reference, by I really mean my brother, who lives in Oz and was kind enough to do my bidding.

I'd love to jump onboard with the P8P, but with the $400 price jump I'll give it a miss for the time being.

P.i.t.a for now so I've made a decision to postpone until maybe it turns up on Dick Smith, Mighty Ape, or Parallel imported come down in price. By that time there could be an 8a to look at.

or (c) Pixel is sold by a telco in NZ market, lol.

I am in bit of a dilemma. My wife is heading off to Oz shortly so she could pick up the P8 fro JBHiFi and get the voucher which she could use for something I Guess.  But then Amazon is selling the P8 with the free Pixel Buds for $699 but they're won't ship here. But they do ship to Youshop and I have a 50% discount voucher from Youshop I can use to reduce their shipping costs.

Finally Google is also selling the P8 for $699 with the free Pixel Buds. But Google's offer is attractive since they are taking in tradeins and I happen to have a Pixel 4XL at my friend's house where it was repaired by Google but never sent back here. Google is offering $260 trade-in on it. The issue is that, the last time I tried to order from Google, and even using a US CC, once I entered the Youshop address, while the purchase appeared to go through, about 15 minutes later Google cancelled the transaction - maybe because it was being shipped to a reshipper?

BestBuy also has the same deal and will ship to Youshop but no trade-in deal.

I suspect I read that youshop won't ship batteries or anything with batteries any more, but I could be wrong there. Australia sounds like an easy option, that's where mine is coming from.

From their site

Batteries & corrosives

  • Vivo Smartphones (all makes and models)
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Smartphones (USA)
  • Ni-Cad batteries
  • All used electronics with li-ion/rechargeable batteries are not permissible for Air/Sea Freight under the regulations.

So the P8 should be okay

Good. I also figured if there was a problem with the phone, Australia is closer and cheaper to send to than USA. I had to return a Kindle to the USA once, because of the lithium battery it had to go express courier for >$100. Fortunately Amazon paid for that.

indapie2000: What would be the differences between the US and Global versions? Is it only the mmWave with the US version?

Looking at the US website, there should not be much difference;

2 For 5G, some carriers may require an upgrade to a 5G plan (sold separately). Contact carrier for details. Unlocked Pixel phones (including phones with Google Fi as a carrier) are not compatible with millimeter wave (mmWave) networks.

Sadly I cannot believe in Googles promises, history shows that their promises are formed with steam. It is why I often come close to buying Pixel and backing away from the purchase. I have Nest cameras and I have a nagging feeling that Google will soon drop these.

Like their Pixel upgrade scheme I feel the extended support will be vapour.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Pixel seems here to stay. Google do drop products quite regularly but it would surprise me if they reneged on a commitment they made so publicly. All of the other pixel update commitments have been honored, pixel phones have been around since 2016.

They may possibly stick around with the Pixel range but the announced 8 years feature, security and OS updates I have reservations that this will be honoured down the track. Google has shown that they don't have staying power.

This is my Google experience. About a year ago my Pixel 4XL died. I sent it to Auckland an the repairers said it has a mainboard failure and could not be repaired and sent it back to me.  It was out of warranty but I contacted Google and complained. I didn't tell them where I was. They said, give the phone was only about 6 months out of warranty they would repair it free. Then they asked if I wanted to take it into an authorised Pixel repair place or send it to Google.  I chose the latter option and they sent me a prepaid Fedex label.

As luck would have it I had a rel going to the US so I printed off the label, packaged the phone and he took it over and dropped it off a a Fedex drop box.

The phone was repaired and was sent back to a friend. I told him to leave it there since I might want to use it as a tradein for the P8. That is where I am now.

I 100% believe it. I have bought previous Pixels and support life has been accurate or better each time. Coincidentally, similar for Chromebook. Pixel is Google's way of getting new operating system features into the market, and motivating the entire Android ecosystem in many different ways.

It is supported by One NZ for their supported handsets. For anything else you're likely to get a 'maybe maybe not please try it and let us know!' response.
