meesham: Well this makes me happy about my decision over the weekend to buy the Orange San Francisco/ZTE Blade ($330 including shipping). I'd been holding out for the X5 but decided I'd waited long enough, and I can't really justify spending the extra $220 for a bit of extra processing power.

Everyone raves about them but haven't actually seen them in NZ (Orange is a UK network right?)

If you do a search for "review Orange San Francisco" you'll find a lot of info for it. It seems like a great phone, a LOT of ROMs available for it (2.3 Gingerbread is currently being worked on). In the UK it's known as the Orange San Francisco (Orange is one of mobile phone companies over there, it's manufactured by ZTE) and in parts of Europe it's the ZTE Blade. Unfortunately as of November they're not making them with AMOLED screens anymore, but they're still 800x480 - it's just TFT (which I can't really complain about).

I got mine off eBay, shipping was about 20 pounds to NZ but it varied by seller. The only thing lacking on it that I could find is the 600Mhz processor, but I'm not a heavy user of processor intensive tasks. I'll report back when the phone arrives and I've had a bit of a play.

Kinda risky buying from ebay thousands of miles away like that.
If it arrives broken/faulty then it'll be a hassle doing the warranty process imo.

Well for me it's worth the "effort". Compared to the P500 (which is pretty much the only other comparable phone in the price range) it's:

20g lighter

2mm thinner

480x800 3.5" screen (compared to 320x480 3.2")

$70 cheaper

The only thing I can find that the p500 has over the Blade is it has a bigger battery.

I went for a seller with a lot of selling history and good rep, there's obviously a risk but I'm willing to take it.

I guess it comes down to the features you need and the price you're prepared to pay.

The main features you get with the X5 are the bigger screen, HD video camera, faster processor and flash.

But the X5 lacks inbuilt GPS app and car cradle that comes with the P500.

You can still get a P500 for 399 from DSE and that makes the X5 37% more expensive - I can understand why people are saying it's not worth it - but we won't really know until we see how it performs.

I have asked 2d if I can review it but at this stage I have heard nothing.

IMHO 600 mhz is at the wrong side of the performance cliff edge. I'll gonna start viewing 800mhz as entry level.

If you're looking to go up to $900, I'd probably recommend shopping around to see if you can get a good deal on the Samsung Galaxy S. When I was investigating which smartphone to get, that was consistently a top recommendation. Performance is meant to be top notch, and it seems to have a healthy modding community for it. It generally retails at $999, but it can sometimes be found for $799.

The X5 definitely has some drawcards over the SGS. Stock Android, and (I'm assuming) no GPS or memory controller issues.

you can get the galaxy s parallel imported for around $750-800.

i expect it should drop in price with the introduction of a lot of new android phones (+dual core cpu phones) over the next 2-3 months. however the availability problems of amyloid (samsung can't manufacture enough screens) may keep the prices higher. Ive noticed that the galaxy s has actually increased in price over the last 4 weeks.

It has an Adreno 200, so not the most powerful of graphics, but that is the same as the original HTC Desire. It should provide perfectly acceptable performance for a phone in this section of the market. The styling is spot on

The X5 will have the Adreno 205, which is a worked over version of the Adreno 200 with a number of bottlenecks sorted out.
