ThomasW: Got my Defy today from Eking, originally received a couple of crappy Chinese phones, contacted EKing and they reordered my Defy so due to the complications took a little longer but they were good to deal with the entire time and I have more confidence in them then I had before hand.

So had it charging most of the day and just started playing with it, had the sim card in upside down which confused me for a while... Going to take a while to figure it out, first to figure out how to stop it from turning off every few seconds....

What do you mean turning off every few seconds?

If I do not touch anything for around 30 seconds it enters stand by and turns off.  Only takes a few seconds to waken it, but a bit annoying. Now I am getting faster it is no longer as noticeable.

The first parcel had two chinese phones in it, eKing said the Defy was stolen in the mail and got replaced by the cheaper phone.... Unknown what really happened  but they were easy to deal with and had no problems getting a actual defy sent.

Have changed the time out setting to 1 minute, so should hopefully not close down while I am lost in thought....  Hated the touch screen keyboard to begin with, not I realized I have to aim slightly to the side, typing quite well now.... Going to test out google night sky thing soon :)

Edit: Google Night Sky is dangerous, nearly got me killed... Was standing on the balcony looking at the screen and stars trying to find patterns when I nearly walked into the railings....  Seems to be fairly accurate, moon was sort of in the predicted location.

Hi Guys,

Just while I remembered, returning to the 2.2 update...
I finally got my phone to update to 2.2, I think it was a UK version in the end.
Anyway just incase anyone else had this problem, I noticed my phone was going extremely slow after the update. After a bit of looking around I found that doing a full system reset is the best way to go about fixing it.
After doing this, (the recommendation was to reset it three times and also format the memory card) the phone worked a lot better, however the mobile internet stopped working.
After speaking with 2 degrees the following steps got it going again:

1) Go to settings, Wireless and Networks, Mobile Networks, Access Point names.
2) If nothing is in this list, press the menu button and select New APN
3) Enter an arbitrary name for the 'name' section
4) Under the APN section type 'internet' all lowercase
5) Set authentication type as "None"
6) Under APN type, type in "default", again all lowercase
7) Press menu again and select save

The internet should now work.
Im not sure if anyone has had trouble with this after a full reset/update but this may be some use to someone in the future!

Cheers,
Ed

Anyone seen a local car kit mount? Preferably the genuine version. I cant seem to locate one locally, only overseas.

Is it possible to improve the photos taken by the Defy, I have played around with the camera a few times and the results are fairly bad.  I suppose 5mp on such a small sensor would never take a decent photo.

I'm not sure about geniune options but there are some really cheap ones on Trademe..

The Defy's camera isn't spectacular even compared to other 5mp phone cameras.. You could try other camera applications with more options for tuning, like Camera 360 or lgCamera, and see if you get some better pics that way.

Have tried  lgCamera and the images are still generally poor. So I am going to carry a camera around with me just in case rather then relaying on the phone.

I finally managed to download the newer version of Android onto my Defy. My phone was T-Mobile Germany one of the last networks to release the update. I beleive its been out for a couple but have not tried for a while. Can not say I have notice much different.

kobiak: I've decided to give MIUI (custom rom) a go on my defy yesterday. and what I could say is just wow!

camera works, have not tested gps yet... should be fine too. games are fine.

2100-2200 quadrant score :) dunnow how accurate it's...

and I have oldish defy with green lens.

Miui will keep getting better for the defy, all the recent changelogs show the devs are pouring heaps of time into the defy. It's pretty awesome imo but not everyones cup of tea. Great news for you is that it's an officially supported phone rather than a port!

Id love to see a fool proof way of installing on a Defy. All of the tutorials Ive read still leave me uncertain if I want to take the plunge. Any tips? :-)
