motorwayne: Being new to Android..Q: How can i install the stock ICS mail app onto this HTC device? Apparently I can do it without rooting it, so where can I get it?

Cheers

Didn't realize you were moving over from iOS - congrats! If you like to tinker with your phone, you'll love Android, and the One X is an incredible Android phone to start on. Let me tell you, it hasn't always been this friendly or smooth.

You can side load apps by finding the *.apk file online, downloading or transferring it to the phone, then installing it using Astro File Manager (great app) or something similar. You may need to go Settings > Applications > Unknown Sources (allow installation of non-market apps). It may be in a slightly different place in Sense 4.0, sorry my One X is powered off at the moment.

That said, I looked around a bit, and it seems like loading non-market email apk's can be hit or miss. You can probably find the email.apk file uploaded somewhere if you google around, but it may not work at this point.

People really like K-9 Mail, you can get it from the market and give it a try. The thing you mentioned with the Gmail IMAP folders is normal, that happens on my Ipad as well.

Enjoy your One X, I'm sure enjoying mine! Even having a good time using Sense again, I'm sure I'll root and flash a new ROM when the time comes, but they've certainly improved things with this release.

Regarding the quick dial -

I'd say the best thing to do is add the "People" widget to one of your home screens - I like the vertical strip. Then you can just tap the person's picture on the home screen and it will automatically start a call (or start a text or email if you prefer).

The Vodafone Facebook page just announced that the One X will be released soon as well. That makes all 3 releasing it. No word on pricing yet.

Always the way. Its either they all (VF,Telecom etc) get the device soon after the launch, or all get the device 6 months later. Its never really one company getting the device and then another having it 6 months later.

Still anxiously awaiting mine!  Only 4 days

Anyone tried the battery fix on XDA?

XDA Link

Apparently gives 10-20% more battery life, after the dev on that thread found the Tegra 3 settings weren't in the correct sys folder!

Might give it a go when mine arrives, although i reckon HTC must be pretty on to it, and are probably preparing a quick patch for current users?

To try the battery thing on XDA, don't you need to ROOT the device?

Not sure I want to do that at this stage...don't know?

Yeah I think you do need to root it, I think I'll probably wait for HTC to release it too.  Don't like rooting my phones within the first few months of ownership, always worried I'll screw something up

Chances are that it'll be fixed in the 1.28 update, a Chinese RUU was leaked a couple of days ago so a global OTA shouldn't be too far away

Makes me wonder how Telecom, Vodafone and 2degrees are going to handle all these small, sequential but critical updates...

So will each telecom company have their own ROM or will it just be stock Sense 4 with their widgets added? The latter would be better but perhaps the former more likely? The trouble with custom roms from the telecoms is the delay in both the initial release and the updates.
So far the best price from a NZ retailer I have seen is Telecom's $899 pre-order and the worst a computer retailer for $1058. Still hasn't matched the price I can pick one up for in Oz (GST paid).

Edit: Corrected high price.

Good question!,  I guess Blair, Murray, I and a few others will be able to tell you this coming Wednesday

I'm hoping for the latter also, but with the Sensation it was a full Telecom branded rom

Telecom are notoriously slow with the firmware updates

Does anyone have any ideas as to why we are getting the One X & One V through telecom and not the One S?
Only interested as the One S is the one 'i had been looking at getting.
Cheers.

No market for it when it's priced around $900~. It's all about selling and while the S4 snapdragon can best Tegra 3, to the average consumer, quad c0rez is what is going to sell the product + 720p screen.

Cheers for that. I'm just not a fan of the size of the "X". And as you say the "S" is able out perform the "X".
