Ambrose_1: Is there a way to sort the app draw alphabetically? Other than putting it in list view? I usually have it in list view but it always reverts back after reboot and randomly during the day sometimes

Try a different launcher like Go Launcher ex.

Brendan:

3. read our FAQ in my sig below.

Will the FAQ include how to backup your device before rooting, such as the CSC, modem files etc. ?

There is no such method.

e.g. backing up your system REQUIRES root.

Luckily though, if you noted your firmware version, you can usually download it from samfirmwares.com and revert it back to factory with odin. It'll still show you have flashed it though, unless you use the jig.

You can use "AppZorter" - https://market.android.com/details?id=net.demidoes.appzorter.lite&feature=more_from_developer - to sort your application tray alphabetically.

Downloaded 2 rom files

1. VillainRom -2.3 Lite -signed.zip
2. VillainRom -2.3.0 - signed.zip

Successfully installed VillainRom 2.3 Lite, seems much cleaner than the full version.

I used to be able to add/remove .apks by using ES file explorer, I managed to add a widget by copying and pasting into /system/app

but when I tried to copy and paste LivewallpaperPicker.apk and VideoPlayer.apk it successfully copies but didn't seems like it's installed.

Any ideas?

I did search and came across this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875797

but that seems very different to the popular copy and paste method.

I'm not sure you can for these types of applications. I have a sneaky suspicion you have to use ADB to push them.

If you haven't already tried Hardcore's Speedmod kernel (or even if you did previously!), I'd highly suggest you give vT16 a whirl - it's a wee beauty!

Will report back on battery life in due course - I'm sure it will be good, as the previous version I tried was as good as Ninphetamine, even with running at stock clock/voltage.

ADB push simply copies files into the phone's file system. A root-ready file manager should be able to do the same thing.

My guess is that these APKs have dependencies on other APKs. I've seen in some of the custom ROM change logs that seemingly unneeded APKs have been removed and then re-added because some other app needs them.

Unrelated note... @samfirmware tweeted about an hour ago that they have a new ROM version coming, XXKG6 (Android 2.3.4). It'll be interested to see what's been changed.

Mmm, I had a signed zip for Superuser (for my tablet) and couldn't get it to install using CWM.  I had to use ADB to get it there - which worked flawlessly - my first ADB push.  Anyway, that's the reason I suspected it might need ADB.  But I think you're right. I have vague recollections that there are some apps that have dependencies.  How nice annoying :)

EDIT: strikethrough doesn't work. -nice-

Running 22 hours now, with Juice Defender putting it into airplane mode from 11pm - 6am, full sync running all day, market updates, a few txts, wee bit of web browser, and a 10 minute phone call - 82% left.

Nice! Laughing

Would be down to around 70% by now on Ninphetamine I'd say. . . .

Have any of you guys bought your SGS2 via one of the many parallel import (Electron World, Eking etc) shops?

Thinking of getting two SGS2's (one for the wife), but not sure whether I should go parallel import or not, as it could save $800 if I do.

I see BLN-supporting kernels are now arriving on the scene, choice.

BLN=back light notifier for those who weren't Galaxy SI veterans before their upgrade - uses the LED lights on the phones capacitive buttons as notification lights. Much better option than NOLED.

Actually dw I just flashed the T16 version and kept CWM which is nice.

T17 is out but I'll wait for a bit just to make sure it's stable and then flash it.

Thanks for recommending that kernel.

Hi everyone, an utter noob to smartphones here. I just got a galaxy 2 yesterday and am floored at the basic functions, is there some sort of instruction manual?

For example, when you turn it on up comes a garish orange screen with the time, can I change that bg?

Also I don't want the google search on the second screen, and there are a bunch of blank screens, how do i customize them?

How do you buy apps? Which are the best ones to have? What do you have to watch out for - viruses?
Do you need a virus scanner? the seem to be offered in the apps market.

Are there tabs for the web browser, or a better browser? can I stop it wanting to show chinese when I type into it, can I delete the chinese totally off the system?

I discovered the 'back button' being the bottom right thingiee, but does that actually close applications? How can you see what is still running on the system? Sigh, some days windows is easier :-)

Finally, if I set the phone up and then root it, which I will do when I feel confident enough, will I lose any settings?

cheers
