Hey guys,

A friend of mine has brought a Motorola Atrix 2 from the usa that was locked to at&t. It was unlocked when he got it and worked fine until he decided to factory reset it. So then he purchased some unlock codes for it and put them in, it said sim unlock successful, yet it says no sim card to vodafone and 2degrees sims.

So he gave it to me to have a look at. I tried a 2degrees sim and vodafone sim, it said no sim card.

So I decided to try a Skinny sim card in it, and it works fine.

This got me really confused, Any ideas why?

I have also tried resetting a number of times but it only seems to like skinny sims

How would i get this to accept 2degrees or vodafone? When he first got it before he reset it it worked fine

I think skinny is a really good provider anyway for $8/wk you get a lot of txt/data/mins...

ideas:

1. check xda, maybe flashing a custom kernal + custom rom will fully unlock

2. skinny SIM -> port to vodafone/2degrees ??? dunno if this would work or not

That's an interesting dilemma. You say it was locked when purchased from AT&T. Therefore it must have been on a plan of some sort. I presume the plan was terminated.

Then when he got back here he purchased an unlock code from one of the onlines sites and the phone became unlocked and was usable on all networks.

Finally he decided to factory reset the phone and now it only works on Skinny.

My only thoughts are

1. factory setting the phone put it back in a locked status but for some reason the SP Lock also appears to allow Skinny SIMSs. Maybe there is an error in the locking software?n Ca he reenter the unlock  code he purchased?

2 Has the phone been off plan for a while?  If so then reports on the web suggest you can call AT&T and they will unlock the phone for you, presumably by providing an unlock code?

I have the following number for ATT Mobility 1-800-331-0500 which you can dial for free if you install the Vonage client for Android on a phone. And you don't need a working SIM to do that.

Its got me really confused. Because if you enter any unlock code even a completely ranom  one it says unlock successful but yet unless theres a skinny sim in it it says insert sim card, it doesnt say enter an unlock code. And the other interesting thing it says 4G when its on skinny. I also havnt tried it on telecom but i would expect the same results there

Would it be possible to aquire a New Zealand version of the rom? eg the one that teleocom sells

By the way the phone was purchased from trademe unlocked. the seller on trademe purchased it unlocked from the usa.

It worked until he factory reset it. So then he purchased unlock codes, and when you put them in it says Sim Unlock Successful, there are 3 different codes.

My mate just screwed up his Atrix 2 buy flashing an AT&T rom, it wouldnt send texts or anything, so he flashed a standard Motorola rom off XDA, which worked, but it still had 4G up the top and some AT&T apps on it - which bothered him.

He ended up sending it back to Telecom and he got the Telecom firmware flashed back onto it for $55.

I flashed it back to the normal at&t rom but roms dont do anything to the unlocked state of the phone :P oh well it works on skinny, still is quite frustrating though

Did your mate bought the atrix 2 from telecom? Maybe he forgot to flash the kernel. To get away the at&t app, he can try to use titanium backup.
