Just wondering if there were any owners out there who could offer their thoughts on this phone?

Seems to be the S2 on steriods and a tempting buy.

dont know but it is rather confusing with it still being called a S2 when it is larger and 4.5 screen etc.
I was looking at reviews of S2 and then with some I find oh its not the normal s2 it has different screen and faster processor etc so not really the same phone.

Which particular version of the phone are you looking at? There's the Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD (i727), which was designed specifically for the AT&T network in the US, or the Galaxy S II HD LTE, which appears to be a bit more generic.

You definitely want to avoid the Skyrocket version. That doesn't have the right frequencies to work on the networks here (except for 2G voice).

The LTE version might work though. It looks like there are 2 variants of this phone. One will only work on the Vodafone/2degrees (900MHz) networks, and the other has quad-band 3G and will work on all of the networks.

The big thing you'll have to watch is lack of support. These phones are using Qualcomm chipsets rather than the Exynos chipset that comes with the standard SGS2. This means that you'll have a lot more trouble finding other people who use the phone, custom firmware, etc.

If you want a phone with a bigger screen then your best bet is the Galaxy Note. It's effectively and oversized SGS2, and uses a lot of the same base hardware. Or you could wait a month or 2 and go for the SGS3, which is set to be announced May 3rd (UK time). That's expected to have a 4.7" 1280x720 screen, a quad-core Exynos processor, and a 12MP camera.

The i727 will be fine on XT 3G

But yeah, as above, both of those won't get updates/ROMs as fast as the standard Galaxy S II

PLus it seems the cheapest price is about 750-800? I'd just wait a week for the GS3.

I got my GS1 for $1050 on release day
and my GS2 for $950 on release day(avoided tax/customs)

Both from Clove. I'd expect a similar price for the GS3

I looked into this handset recently, but the lack of support pointed about above and nearness of the S3 was a turn off. I'd wait.

Thanks for your input guys, appreciate it.

Tossing up between the Note (love the size) the Nexus (love the size and form factor, little hesitant with the camera not being on par with others) and the SII (love the screen, camera, but reservations about the size as I prefer the bigger screen for my gorilla hands)

Don't want to wait for the SIII as that will be outside by budget (about $550)

Thoughts? Suggestions? Recommendations?

Are you looking at a contract deal, or $550 outright for a new handset?

All of the options there will fall outside your budget without a contract deal (price aside though, from what you're saying it sounds like the Note is the clear choice for you).

If the Skyrocket is designed for AT&T then it will work here on XT and SKinny..  AT&T = 3G Network    HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100..

Outright purchase.

For the sake of me deciding lets assume all are the same price :-D

Phone seems to have pretty good support on XDA. Or is that not the kind of support you were referencing?

It has quite small support on XDA, in fact it has 24500 threads less than the Galaxy S II

But if you want it, get it. As long as you are happy using it with Telecom XT only, and waiting for a while to get updates etc
