Be interested to know if it's representative of the final version they'll get. Did it have any extra _useful_ goodies installed? (Such as decent 3rd party GPS software etc).

What's wrong with the built in GPS software?

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

My SGS1 looks about the same size in my hand. I guess I'm going to have to invent finger stilts.

What's wrong with the built in GPS software?

Google Nav? It's "ok" but it's not great. Navigon which came with the SGS2 is much better IMHO. Plus Google maps requires an active data connection which isn't useful when you're driving around the back blocks, plus it eats valuable data allocation. Yeah, it can pre-cache but that's a manual process.

I've yet to have a proper play with Sygic, but it looks promising.

I really should reclaim my antique Garmin unit and see if I can shoehorn some more recent maps into it.

I found the navigon software a bit of a pain to use to be honest - admittedly I am using a galaxy ace and the navigon I installed was the version from about Nov last year, but the thing that I found especially annoying with navigon was trying to put street addresses into it - it always seemed to need the suburb - ok that shouldnt be a big deal - but say its a long road that goes through a couple of suburbs - I dont really know that detail too well - thats why I am asking the software to help me - it didnt seem to like the house number and street name unless you had the correct suburb. On the other hand google navigate just seemed to work. The other thing with navigon was that its voice instructions would be turn left, turn right etc. With google navigate it has a fairly decent go at reading the street name out to you - I found that surprisingly comforting. But I take your point about the data. I pre-cached most of Auckland.
