Thought i'd try this over here too, started a thread on GP but i reckon you guys might have more input!

Theres always been heaps of threads where people post a list of their apps, and its boring as we get repeats of the same ones that everyone uses. No descriptions really either.

So i'm more interested in one or two apps per post, with a small comment on it, on what you think of it.

Name:

Price:

Store Link:

Description:

Comments:

Name: Swiftkey 3 Beta

Price: ~$4, Beta is free during testing

Store Link: Direct Download to Beta, older Swiftkey X in store here

Description:
The latest beta update available to swiftkey VIPs. Swiftkey is a keyboard which is very good at prediction and correction, most of you probably know it well. The latest beta adds some nice new themes as well as smartspace predictions.

Comments:
I'm really liking the new themes, holo fits well into ICS (seen below). Smartspace is very useful for when you forget to press space, it figures it out for you. See screenshot, it's pretty impressive!

Name: DiskUsage

Price: Free

Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.diskusage

Description:
Gives a visual breakdown of what's taking up space on your device. Can view apps as well as data on your sd card. View any partition on rooted devices.

Comments:Very smooth and intuitive to use. The zooming and the tapping to expand is nice and fluid. It let me know quickly whats hogging my small internal storage.

Thanks for the reminder, I don't even remember purchasing SwiftKey but there it is. It must have been offered cheap at some stage and I'm glad I did because now that I've actually tried it, it's amazing.

I stumbled on this Siri sort-of app and so far so good. I've asked for tomorrow's weather, checked Gmail, sent a SMS and opened my browser.

"The Speaktoit Assistant is a virtual buddy for your smartphone that answers questions in natural language, performs tasks, and notifies you about important events. The Assistant saves you time and makes communication with gadgets and web services easier and less stressful"

Application: MetService

Price: $2.59

Store Link: MetService available on Google Play and iTunes for iOS

Description: Meteorological Service of New Zealand. Features include current conditions, real-time rain radar, latest video updates, 10 day and hourly forecasts, traffic cameras and more.

Comments: Has a good range of features although some people have noted the absence of skiing and marine reports. Although it does have snow reports as part of road conditions and alerts. It has been mooted that a widget will also be available soon. So a good start for an application that'll improve and adapt over time.

Application: VLC Beta v0.0.1

Price: Free

Store Link: VLC Beta  available on Google Play

Description:VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player that plays most multimedia files as well as discs, devices, and network streaming protocols. This is a BETA version of the port to the Android™ platform. It is intended for power users and hackers. This version is NOT stable and is slower than the final version.

It might kill your kitten, destroy your house and start the mayan apocalypse.
Use it at your own risk. Have Fun! :)

Comments:  This current VLC Beta version 0.0.1 needs more than my PowerVR SGX540 GPU to play a 720p movie.

Application:
MX Player

Price: Free / $6.82

Store Link: MX Player available on Google Play

Description: MX Player is a video player with multi-core and good breadth of codec support. Can be used with ES File Explorer to play videos from external LAN storage devices like NAS and etc and have the video streamed to your device.  Also degardes gracefully to support low-end Android devices with weak GPU.

Comments:  MX Player is ideal for low performance Graphics Processing Units (GPU) like the Adreno 200 seen in many early Android devices. Normally the Adreno 200 GPU would be useless in displaying anything more than a low res mp4, however with MX Player one can reduce the colour depth from 32bit to 16bit and still have a very watchable 720p mkv movie (Handbrake to Android High) with only the slightest bit of lag. Any other video player on such a low spec'd GPU playing a 720p movie is unwatchable.  And this is one area VPlayer is not at it's best and MX Player is better.

Application:
BSPlayer

Price: Free

Store Link: BSPlayer available on Google Play

Description:  BSPlayer has it's own built in hardware acceleration and on some devices this makes the difference between a playable movie and a non-playable movie. For those with NAS or external storage devices, this player comes with a bit of a treat, in that it supports LAN file structure browsing, most other movie players rely on file managers to support their external access. BSPlayer supports a wide range of media types including, avi, divx, flv, mkv, mov, mpg, mts, mp4, m4v, rmvb, wmv, 3gp, mp3... and streaming content such as RTMP, RTSP, MMS (tcp, http), HTTP Live stream, HTTP.

Comments: BSPlayer is one of your more obscure video players and if you have a Warehouse Stationary FV-1 Android TV box, then it's the only video player that will support and display 720p movies on this device (SGX540 GPU) and that's a fact. Laughing
However for low end GPU devices (Adreno 200) playing a 720p movie, this video player is a non-performer and will only really work on mid to high end GPU.
