Hi there
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 (I9100zske7) I am a newbie when it comes to android ops. Will I be able to upgrade to isc by using Kies. I have windows 7 64 with kias installed, when both are connected by way of usb I get a message label in Kies stating that,

"Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies.
Current fimware version: PDA:KE7 / phone:KEA /CSC:KE7 (KOR)"

Thanks for your help and ideas.

It's interesting that Kies is telling you that "your device does not support software upgrading." In my experience, this means that Kies is being told that there isn't a valid firmware for your current country/firmware combo.

One thing that I find intriguing is that you've got a Korean firmware on your phone (CSC says KOR), yet you have a GT-I9100 model. I thought that all of the Korean phones used SHW-M250S, SHW-M250K or SHW-M250L as their model names.

If you want to upgrade to ICS, you may need to do it the hard way. This involves downloading a new firmware package, booting the phone into "download mode", and using a piece of software called Odin to do the upgrade. It's not all that easy, and there's a chance you'll lose all of your data, but it's a guaranteed way of getting a firmware upgrade.

Thanks for the replies. I have asked on vodafone and they asked me where i got it from and the answer is from trademe so vodafone is unable to help me. So I guess I will have to do it the hard way. Where would i download a new firmware package and is there any good tutorials showing what to do as you have suggested.

The best place to look for firmware is on XDA Developers. It's a forum site, and has a very active section dedicated to the Galaxy S II. There's a good chance that if you have a question, someone there will already have an answer for it.

For instructions on flashing a ROM, check out this thread. It gives you a link to the Odin tool that you need, and gives you step-by-step instructions on what to do (including screen shots). It should help you through most of the process.

The only other thing you need is to download a firmware package. There are a number of official packages to choose from. You could go with a generic European firmware (either for western Europe or for the Nordic countries), a Vodafone NZ firmware, a Telecom NZ firmware, or something else altogether. My suggestion would be to go with a generic western European package. These packages are completely unbranded and use English as the primary language.

To get one, open up this thread and search the page for XEU. (Hit Ctrl+F in your browser to open a Find window.) At the time of writing this the latest matching firmware is I9100XWLP7. Simply download the file (it'll be a .zip archive) and follow the instructions, and you should be up and running in to time.

Note: Flashing a new firmware in Odin can sometimes do a factory reset of your phone. You won't lose anything that's stored on the internal SD card, but you may lose your apps and settings. With any luck your apps will automatically download and install themselves, but there's no nice way to get the other data back. If you don't want to lose your contacts/text messages/etc, have a look at some of the backup apps on Google Play. There are free apps available that can back up the most important data.
