My girlfriend has been having problems with her Galaxy Y phone (on Telecom, purchased from Telecom shop).  About 3 weeks after she purchased it she noticed that the GPS wouldn't turn on so we sent it away but no fault was found.  The phone came back with updated firmware and a working GPS, but about 3 weeks later the same thing happened again.  Once again it was sent away, not problem was found and when it came back the GPS was working again (no update this time but factory reset performed).  48hours later we had the same problem so took it back to Telecom shop and eventually got a refund.  We ended up buying another Galaxy Y and are now having the exact same problem again, is this common with Galaxy Ys?

How do you know it's not working? An app stops finding the location? Have you tried one of the many apps that show GPS raw data?

The most obvious indicator is that the GPS button stops responding (when you drag down the notification bar there are several button for turning wifi/bluetooth/GPS/auto-rotate etc on and off).  It will just stay grey (off) and not toggle to green (on).  Also, whenever an app requiring GPS is launched (google maps, mapmyrun etc) it will tell you the GPS is not on and take you to the area in the phone settings where you can enable it.  No matter how many times you try and enable it in the settings the checkbox stays greyed out.

It is worth mentioning that whenever the sim card is removed it starts working again which explains why the service technicians couldn't fault it.  Even if the same sim card is re-inserted it will function properly for an arbitrary length of time before failing.

Are you sure its not just resetting the phone (rebooting) that is fixing it?

Simply turning it off and on again doesn't seem to fix it, it is possible that the extra step of removing the battery (in order to access the sim) may be doing it.  Samsung have just told her that it might be one of the apps she is using so we are going to try a process of elimination there.  I suspect it could be the 'MapMyRun' app as none of the other ones use the GPS with the exception of Facebook and stock standard pre-installed ones like Google Maps (assuming here that these are so mainstream and common that they can be trusted not to break it).
