Does anybody know how the google play store works with it's pricing? They all seem to be in NZD. How are the prices set? Is it converted from USD/GBP? I would kinda like to know if I'm paying a comparable price to other regions when buying an app. From what I understnad Apple seems to add a bit ectra for those down under in their pricing.
Also I hear that there are some sites that give away free apps on daily or weekly basis. Is there a good place to find those?

It's one price, set globally, converted into NZD from USD.

e.g. Final Fantasy III is NZ$19.99; USD$15.99 giving a conversion rate of NZ$1=US$0.80 - which is pretty much the current mid-market rate on xe.com (0.799700)

I wouldn't recommend the free apps of the day - they're generally rubbish, and you get no ongoing support/updates.

The Amazon App Store (not that it's technically available in NZ) runs a free app of the day, but it screws over the developers terribly (http://blog.shiftyjelly.com/2011/08/02/amazon-app-store-rotten-to-the-core/).

Personally I stick to the Play Store - a few times a year there are sales with deep discounts as well.

It's actually not always a straight conversion. When you publish an app in Google Play, you set the price in your currency, and it automatically converts it to the equal amount in all the other currencies, but you can override that and set whatever price you want in different currencies.

Is there are way to check other currency prices? And is there are way to purchase in whatever currency is cheapest? I imagine that would get tricky.

You would need to connect through a proxy in that country. I think the purchasing should work through a proxy as well. When I was in canada, the prices just automatically changed to canadian prices, so the same should work in a proxy.

Apple's prices are actually cheaper in NZ than in the US once you subtract GST (the US prices don't include tax).
