I am off to Melbourne for a few days and would like to use google maps there on my HTC Desire. I also don't want to be using a lot of 3G data if I can help it.

Is there any way of preplaoding map data for, say, central Melbourne on the phon before I leave? I am aware that Google Maps caches quite a lot of data, but it still seems very network busy even in my own city, where you would assume it would have plenty of cached data.

In the latest version of Google Maps, hit the menu button and click "make available offline". Then select the area of the map you want to pre-cache.

You used to click and hold on a maps area, but I noticed it stopped working a few months back. Did they just make it a menu item instead of a context menu popup?
