Hi there
Has anyone either had replaced (by a repair shop) or replaced themselves, the back speaker of an HTC Desire. It appears mine is knackered, only the ear piece speaker works (I've tried all the standard stuff and of course played with settings/volume etc.). Could someone please tell me who and how much (cost) would make such a repair in Wellington - or whether it's worth having a crack at it myself per the instructions on You Tube? (I'm not your average 'handywoman' but reckon I could manage a small screwdriver).

I think you might need more than just a screwdriver to replace the speaker. It'll almost certainly be soldered to the phone's motherboard and will probably be hard to remove even with an iron. It might be easier to see if you can get a complete board.

Getting a proper repair place to do the work won't be cheap. You'd be looking at a good couple of hours labour, plus parts. I'd hazard a guess at the $200-300 mark, maybe more.

In light of your info, I think I'll just live with no sound until my phone dies, then start afresh! I've had a good innings with it so far, about 4 years, so no complaints really. Not worth spending several hundred dollars on it at this stage ...

These guys will do a speaker replacement for $149

I've dealt with them a few times and they're pretty good. They also offer a 3 month warranty on the repair.

$149 still is a bit to pay though, I guess it's just a matter of figuring out if it is worth replacing for that price.

The HTC Desire isn't 4 years old

It's about two and a half.

My desire is still going strong here. Battery life is getting weaker and weaker however.
