Just spotted this on Snapper blog:

Important notice for customers with a Touch2Pay Samsung Galaxy S III.

Customers who have purchased a Touch2Pay Samsung Galaxy S III from a 2degrees store in Wellington before Monday 13th August and use the Snapper Mobile app will need to swap out their current SIM card for a new Touch2Pay v2 SIM card before they update to the latest Galaxy S III software that Samsung will be providing shortly.

The new software upgrade from Samsung for the Galaxy S III makes a change to the interface between the Android Operating System and the SIM card which introduces a compatibility issue. This prevents the Snapper Mobile app on your smartphone from being able to read your Snapper balance or top up. The swap out to a Touch2Pay v2 SIM removes this incompatibility.

Before upgrading to the latest Samsung Galaxy S III phone software, you’ll need to swap out your SIM at your nearest 2degrees store in Wellington. The staff in-store will provide you with the new Touch2Pay v2 SIM and organise a Snapper balance transfer (including any travel passes and travel concessions). Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you.

For more information and to find out whether this issue affects you, please visit snapper.co.nz/touch2payv1simswap

Please note: This SIM swap out does not affect customers who have other Touch2Pay smartphones.

Reading the 2D site information you linked to makes me believe that other NFC devices might now be supported by the 2D snapper sim... certainly not bad news.

Any device that has the SIm Alliance API built into Android should work. Stock standard builds don't, but there is a lot of NFC stuff happening now and their API is gaining a lot of traction.

It would be awesome to see Google adopt this API into the OS, but clearly there are competing companies pushing their own API's and solutions.

Just love this, "go to a 2Degrees store in Wellington" yet Snapper is used in Auckland and Palmerston North as well.

They have reasons to not have the Snapper app/SIM available in Auckland. I don't know about Palmerston.

They left that announcement awfully late - I've already got the update waiting, and didn't have a chance to get to a store today... Anyone know what the changes are, apart from making everyone need a new SIM?

Poor effort on 2degreesmobile's part. It's a two month old firmware update and they didn't communicate this issue very well. My fiancee is furious as she did the update last night without knowing and now can't use her snapper

+1

I got the update yesterday, and was lucky (or smart :P) enough to read the update instructions log before updating, so now I know exactly what happened and what I need to do. My sim snapper still works fine, just can't be read by the phone and snapper app.

I kept wondering since the update, about the technical problems and the nature of the update. Any info??

I agree too, why not send txts or emails to clients letting them know?? If I for example didn't read the update log, I would end up with snapper not working on my phone, and I hope that the call centre team are aware of the problem, otherwise it will add to the client's frustration.

Finally, I would like to add one more point, which is, since I am a 2Degrees customer, I am quite sure that all the efforts, updates and sim swaps is for clients like myself to have better experience. I can see there is a few mistakes in how this was handled, but hopefully 2Degrees will be able to take care of all the issues and provide a service that is "outstanding" instead of "average".

Since we are getting a new sim swap, we'll probably also need to call snapper to transfer the snapper credit to the new sim, and will need to register the new snapper sim too. Sigh.

It says in the OP that staff at 2 Degrees will transfer the balance when you get the V2 SIM.

Oh, that's good, the last time I've done the swap (3 times so far) they told me to contact snapper for the balance transfer which is what I've done. This will help reduce the hassle by one step, now it's the store, then registering the new snapper sim.

Ok, I updated anyway as the 2 Degrees shop on Lambton Quay in 2 mins walk. However, the Snapper app still displays the balance. Maybe I timed it well getting my Snapper SIM on Monday Cool

What an absolute palava.

I went in to the Willis St store and asked the guy for a sim. He asked if I'd reserved one and begrudgingly gave me one when I said 'what?'.

Then when I asked him to transfer the balance over (like they've done before when my other sim got swapped) he said they couldn't/wouldn't do that so I had to ring Snapper.

After ringing Snapper they told me I had to talk to 2D and get them to do it... A lot of asking nicely and she has tried to email me a token to apply to the account but there's no guarantee that it will work... if it ever turns up in my email inbox.

Seriously, what the hell.

Ok, I just came back from the 2Degrees shop, and here are the facts (according to the shop sales person):

1- I can confirm that I DO HATE this process because it turned out to be a pain in the arse for me and some hassle I didn't need
2- They will NOT transfer your balance nor your passes (my free weekend bus passes) to the new sim, and the guy confirmed that I will need to contact Snapper to do this for me
3- Transferring the balance and passes will take 24 hours. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
4- For the transfer process, you will need both the snapper serial on the old card and the new one (the card in which you old sim was fixed to, and you probably through it away). REALLY?????
5- The serial now is printed on the V2 sim, which means you will need the sim out of the phone, when you are ON THE PHONE with snapper so that you can give them the new number, BRILLIANT!!!

So now what I need to do is:
1- Find a way to get the old sim's snapper serial (hopefully it's stored on the snapper website)
2- Take out my new sim and write down it's snapper serial in a piece of paper.
3- Call Snapper to sort out my new sim balance and passes transfer.
4- Wait for 24 hour for this to work
5- Pay my bus ticket back home using cash.

I love 2Degrees

You can still use your V1 SIM to catch the bus, it just won't display the balance in the app (after the LF2 update)

I'd just let it run down on the V1 and then put the V2 in and put credit on it but then I'm all about the path of least resistance Smile

Edit: You'd just need to check your balance on the Snapper website in the mean time of course

I have done this for my trip to work, but won't be able to do it now, since I've activated my v2, my v1 won't get mobile coverage, which is far more important to me to pay the bus. And I am not going to swap sims twice, just to pay the bus.

Update 1:

Here we go, I have called Snapper, and very friendly, I was told I am wrong, and the 2degrees store guy is WRONG, and they should have done it for me. She asked me to go back to the store and ask them to do it, but I have refused to do this because I was there 10 minutes earlier and I haven't got all day.

Anyway, We have done it over the phone (just the transfer thing, don't get your naughty imagination working here) and I ended up with my balance transferred but not my weekend passes Cry Cry

Now she took my number (again don't read too much into it) and promised to call back hopefully with a solution to this problem.

Interestingly enough, she told me something I didn't know and didn't read about in any of the 2Degrees snapper webpages or brochures.

The free weekend passes will not work with any other snapper passes. So if I ever decide to topup my snapper with a month pass or something, I will lose one of them.

The question here is, why haven't I been told this before ???? and why don't they work on fixing this???

Another update:

The nice lady from snapper called me and she has informed me that they can't see, or add the passes to my snapper, and I will have to go back to the 2degrees store and maybe they can help me out.
