I'm trying to help my sister come up into the Smartphone world. I have a budget of $300 with which to get the best phone I can. She is on Telecom XT, so the phone must support that. She also is definitely technically minded, so don't bother suggesting any phones that "are a cracker once you install <insert custom rom>".

I was initially quite keen on the Huawei Ascend G300 for her, which I can get for $299 from a few retailers (and some a little cheaper). But this is the Vodafone variant, and doesn't have both 850/2100 support. My daughter has an X5, and I'm quite impressed with that handset. If it wasn't for the frequency issue, this would've been my pick. I've tried finding a version that does support XT, but haven't had any luck so far.

I note today that The Warehouse have the XT variant of the Motorola Defy available for $249, but I've heard reports that it may be a little laggy unless you install a custom ROM. Anyone know how bad this problem actually is.

Finally, any other phones I should be considering.

For $349, you can get a Nokia Lumia 710 which runs on XT, Vodafone and 2D. This particular version is QUAD BAND 3g. Super easy to use phone.

Yeah, considering that one. Not sure if her budget will stretch the additional $50 though. A little worried about the EOLed nature of the OS, but for my sis this may be a non-issue. No different to getting her an Android that will only have official upgrades to vCurrent +1

For $299 this could be a good starting point:

Comes with Android 4.0 out of the box, though there are better cameras around.

Yeah, saw that one. Was a bit worried about it being a generic Telecom one. It looks like it could be a ZTE phone, and I don't know much about the quality of those. One of my Twitter followers suspects it may be this model or similar

It is a ZTE device, but its not the one you linked to, more like this one though I'm not sure.  It come with a 2 year warranty and actually feels quite nice in the hand.  Would recommend you at least look at it, value for money it would be hard to beat.

Thanks. Do you know how robust the screen is? I've got a cheap Android which I initially purchased for development purposes. As such, its only ever been on my desk, yet its screen is covered in scratches. I wouldn't want to recommend a phone which may be prone to scratching so easily.

I wouldn't fob off ZTE completely, they seem a lot better than their first generation of handsets. It may be a lesser Chinese handset maker but that doesn't mean they're bad (although I won't vouch for them off the bat).

If you're open to parallel importing..

I have to say, I quite like Sony's designs. If I didn't have a Galaxy Nexus, I think I'd most likely consider a Sony phone (or Windows Phone - although, I'd wait until WP8 now.)

Edit:
Regarding screens, anything that isn't Gorilla Glass is terrible. My Galaxy Nexus scratched pretty quickly whereas I didn't need a screen protector for my Optimus 2X at all.

Not sure sorry, it hasn't been around long.  A screen protector might be the solution (I know a lot of people around here don't like them, but for an entry level device they are definitely a good idea IMO).

+1, Gorilla Glass is great and anything else really does need the screen protector.

The experia U looks like a nice phone. Bit over your budget in NZ though. JB has them for $377.

Got an email from my sister. I sent her a list with a bunch of recommendations, including the ones listed here. She decided to go with the Lumia 710. Thanks to all for your help.
