Hi There!

My father in law replaced his aging vodafone android device with a Nexus S which has no FM Tuner built in which he isn't happy about as he spends a lot of time commuting and likes to listen to the radio on his way to work. Looks like the solution would be to stream radio from a service like rdio, but I have two questions.

One which service is least expensive and includes NZ Radio stations like National Radio, and More FM, The Edge, Gold, etc?

Secondly, how much data would an hour of listening consume?

Obviously it's based on 3G or WiFI, and where there is not 3G then he will not be able to listen, I am curious to know if many people use these services a lot and can share experiences about how reliable it is?

Rdio is not a radio service. It's a music streaming service, like Pandora and others.

Tunein in the play store is great and has lots of stations.

Depending on the quality I think it's roughly 30MB-60MB per hour but someone else maybe able to give you a more accurate answer.

If your father has the old phone still he could use a backup program like Titanium Backup to store the file on a external sd card place that in the new phone and restore it from there. Otherwise if you searched xda website you could the original fm radio apk and go from there.

Otherwise like the others have said there's online options like Tunein which offer services but for a true radio station with the search and all that you should look into the above options. Worked for me on my LG O2X. You would need root access for the second option though not sure about the first as my phone is rooted already so it's not a issue for me.

That only applies if the new phone has the hardware to actually be used as an FM tuner...

In any case, I've used Tunein Radio for a long time now and have always been impressed. Most stations offer a range of streaming quality levels too if he finds that it's using too much data, or too little and he would like a higher quality stream.

This probably won't work as the phone won't have any fm tuner hardware ie a radio receiver chip

The Huawei U8800 IDEOS X5 has an FM tuner.
It's not available using the stock firmware, but it can be accessed by sideloading the fm radio APK, and also running the Aurora ICS port by dzo - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492957

+1 for Tunein, it will stream most nz radio stations over wifi/3G

If the phone has the fm tuner hardware, then i would recommend `spirit fm' radio tuner app from the play store
as it is what i use on my DHD/jellybeen combo.
