Just came across this article from engadget, thought to share here:

Galaxy S 4 or Galaxy S IV? Disagreements over the naming convention are likely to rage on now that Samsung's dropped hints that it's planning to replace the Galaxy S III in the spring of next year. A company official reportedly told Korea Times that "the new device is expected to hit shelves globally in March at the latest" following an initial announcement at MWC in February -- and while it would retain the "inspired by nature" design language of its predecessor, the screen might get a bump from 4.8 to 5-inches. It may seem odd for a company to talk up its next product so soon after the last one, but perhaps it's a deliberate marketing move in light of a certain new contender.

The rumours have started a lot earlier this time around for the new Galaxy. I am thinking it is to divert attention from the iPhone 5.

Yeah true.. its most likely to do that..

But I personally think they should have waited abit.. Coz some people would now hold on their galaxy s 3 purchase in anticipation of the s4 early next year..

As is often the case, Engadget reported a bunch of rubbish, and this has already been dismissed by Samsung and reported accurately at sites worth reading like The Verge. Expect the S4 around the same time of year next year as the S3 came out this year, and the S2 the year before that and the S1 a year before that.

My advice: stop reading Engadget.

Anyways, it makes no sense for Samsung to make rumours of this kind to distract from the iPhone 5 - it would actually hurt S3 sales. What they have done to distract from the iPhone 5 is mount a massive advertising compaign for the S3 to coincide with the launch and announcement in larger markets like the UK.

And yet real news, like the LG Optimus G pulling a 7439 Quadrant benchmark compared to Samsung Galaxy S III 5365 or that it got a perfect 60fps on NenaMark 2, hardly rates a mention.

Besides it'll take ages of beating with the ugly stick before another Samsung Galaxy S is ready. :-)

Quadrant is pretty useless as a benchmarking tool these days and 60fps is basically just hitting vsync so meh.. show us GLBenchmark 2.5 results

True. I have an XPERIA X10i with Adreno 200 and I can draw pictures with my colour in set faster than it can process 3D graphics.

GSMArena LG Optimus G some of the first look benckmarks.

Given the LG Optimus G has an Adreno 320 which is mooted to provide more advance 3D graphical processing over any of it's predecessors, one would assume it'll provide some real world benefits.

Quote from Qualcomm.

Adreno 320 GPUThe newly sampling S4 (APQ8064) processor features the Adreno 320 – based on a totally new, very high performance programmable architecture with up to four times the performance of Adreno 225, providing a superior user experience for HTML5 Web browsing, 3D games, 3D user interfaces, and other graphics applications.

It's not only the processor and graphics, there is potential for things like 802.11ac on the SoC too. (High-speed WiFi)

Lets hope they don't gimp it and end up doing what Sony normally does and sell you a complete basket case...and mostly one year after it's competition.

At least Samsung mostly provide the leading edge kit(for it's time) in there new High-end Android devices.

Most smart phones (iPhone 5 and high-end Android) are on the cusp of bettering a Pentium IV 3.2GHz processor and I'm sure the LG Optimus G quad-core S4 already has,

So Ultra high definition screens in a world of exponential growth probably won't be far off.
How that'll translate on a 4" screen is anyone's guess, but it'd be mind bending to see it on a screen when the phone is docked. :-)

May require a bit of a re-think of the Android screen layout for a Ultra high def screen though. ;-)

Am I the only person who would like to see a good phone released with a 'sane' sized screen. 4.8 or 5" is a little too big to be considered portable... and no I don't have small hands ;)

I think Galaxy S2 had a good screen size.. but now getting used to 4.8 on the S3.. Still think its an overkill for a phone..

There are definitely phones coming out with smaller 4.3" - 4.6" screens - check out the Sony Xperia line of phones.

I'm quite fond of the 4.8" screen on my S3, don't think I would like to go any smaller at this point. I don't have any problems with portability and find that even a 7" tablet like the Nexus 7 fits into my pocket fine.

@DrStrangeLove while I think the quad core Snapdragon S4 with Adreno 320 is certainly impressive - LG are not known for stable software or for reliable software updates. Based on their past behaviour I certainly would not purchase an LG handset.
