I am mostly happy with my switch, but there is one thing my iPhone did that I cant get my roid to do.

On my iPhone, when a text or email came in the screen would turn on and a preview of the email or Txt would show.

That means I could sit my phone on my desk, on silent, and the screen changing would be enough to catch my eye for a quick glance to see if it was something I needed to deal with.

I can not for the life of my find out how to get this functionality into my Galaxy S III.

Any suggestions?

I assume you mean the intrusive iOS bubble boxes? The notification drawer is your friend, and small previews of content do show up in it as notifications first arrive

Not sure about getting a preview of email. You can get SMS preview. You will have to use another SMS program Go Sms Pro

If you're looking for a screen-on notification for SMS, then the app "Go SMS" is your friend.

Ahh, forgot to mention both phones sit on my desk locked.

It is the behavior when locked that I am after.

On my S III, I get a vibration notification but the screen does not activate.

Assuming this is a general thread about the thing that bugs me most, then....

The inability to sync multiple Contacts folders or Calendars from an Exchange server account via activesync. Actually Windows Phone 7.5 suffers from the same issue, IOS "just does it".

I'm using Handcent SMS on my S3 and when a text message comes in it is displayed on the screen - even when locked

You are right, I just found a setting in Handcent and turned it on, that is now working. Thanks!

Now if I could just get the same for email...

Apps like NoLed will bring up bubble notifications (small floating icons) on the Black screen.
Different colours for emails, txts, MMS etc, and different bubbles for missed calls etc.

Handscent is what i use and does what you want as you found out

but theres also another app that can notify and turn on the phone and play different sounds
for any notifications for emails sms other apps
missed message flasher

I use it to repeat every 10 min a reminder you missed a call or sms

also allcall recorder app is good also can record all calls and autopurge at set times

so if want to relisten to directions can play it back

I miss the Retina screen on my iPhone. The S3 pentile display is no where near as good.

I also miss the mail client. The Android GMail app makes me scroll around emails where as the iPhone one lets me zoom in and out and see more.

I love the widgets and the fact I can have an always on SIP registration in Android - but apart from that, iOS is better in almost every way.

Best one I ever used was SMS Popup, simple and effective.

+100000, I don't know why we can't pinch zoom in Gmail, it's bad enough on the S3, let alone a smaller device...
Windows Phone 7 isn't much better, 'deleting' emails from my gmail account merely archives them, or so it seems. But at least it has pinch zoom

The handset if only part of the story. It's letting go of all the other tentacles that Apple has created that makes the divorce very messy. iTunes (yes I do like it), and all the hundred of $$$ spent on apps that I would need to start buying again. The integration across other "i" devices in the household also makes it extremely difficult to leave the iflock.
