Hello,

I am looking at getting Samsung nexus. I know it comes with ICS. I'll be running it on telecom xt. Just wondering if I buy one can I upgrade it to jelly bean. I'll be buying it from parallel imported.

Cheers
Vivek

Do you mean Samsung Galaxy Nexus? It is a really good phone and you will get all the updates straight from Google (no carrier delay). Price: nz$520.00

Hmm, glad I stumbled upon this. How long do you think they will continue pushing updates to this phone?

Be careful. It will only get the updates if it has the yakju build which the original build from Google,

Many of the GN out there have slightly different builds like  yakjuxw, yakjuxs, yakjuux, yakjusc, yakjuzs, yakjudv, yakjukr and yakjujp from Samsung (common for phones ex Asia) and they do not get automatic updates. I had yakjuxw from Samsung HK which is where the phone came from and I had to root the phone and then flash the yakju build from here

https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images

to get automatic updates.

Is it possible to find the build prior purchasing the phone?

Not really unless they will install android system info for you and run it to give you the results.

But I think ota builds are out for the other releases so that might not be an issue for now.

nakedmolerat: flash to yakju build

What he said which is what I did but that simple statement understates some complexity in the process.

Firstly flashing new firmware might not be something the the user has done. Then it will erase the phone memory so all data needs to be backed up. Finally and usefully, take the opportunity to root the phone also if you wish. This is the best time to do that.

Hard to say without knowing you. It would be hard for my wife :-) But I think my son could cope.

I've just flashed the new firmware using Samsung Galaxy Nexus Toolkit.  Booting now.  You can download 4.1.2 directly from Google:

https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#yakjujzo54k

E
dit: Just beware that flashing vs OTA does wipe all your settings and apps (you can reinstall any you bought from App store for free, though).  YHBW.

I would check out the LG Nexus 4, ships with the latest 4.2, will end up costing you the same or less to import yourself and arguably far better value for money

I would tend to agree, assuming that pricing really is similar, the LG Nexus is a much more advanced phone.
