This isn't specifically android-related but I couldn't see where else to post it so here goes...................

Am I right in thinking that POP is best suited to situations where you access mail from one device as the mail server deletes the mail once it has been sent as opposed to IMAP for accessing mail across multiple devices ie laptop, tablet, phone?

A friend has a laptop and an android tablet and is complaining that mail (from her POP account) received on the tablet mysteriously disappears before it gets read, ie she receives the notifications in the android email app but if she goes to read them later, they have gone.

My assumption (which is probably totally wrong) is that the windows email client on the laptop is telling the mail server to delete the mail and because the mail has not been read on the tablet yet, it vanishes.

Am I close or in fantasy-land? Laughing

Dont do either, get a gmail account, forward the account that she is currently poping to the gmail account and just use the gmail account, the tablet will work swimmingly with it as will the PC.

But yes if the laptop client is polling the pop account before the tablet then the email is gone, imap will stop that, but gmail is soooooooo muuuuuch better

I suggested that but she didnt want to use Gmail (dont ask) and now she is a few thousand km away with a problem. Will have to find some way of switching off the laptop ( which is a few hundred kms away ) if my scenario is correct.

Hi, I find it odd that about gmail, but still I would go with gmail, get here PC client to imap to gmail and the tablet to either gmail app or web interface, still far more flexible, I guess regardless its still a bit hard to organise the laptop side from a distance regardless of the solution.

If I turn the laptop off, will pop mail then go to the tablet and not get deleted?

should do, this all assumes no other client is popping the account.

Nope, there is only the laptop and the tablet.

As a temporary solution you could just set the pop account (on laptop) to leave messages on the server for 7 days or something similar.

Is it an MS exchange account emails that are disappearing?

Change the password. That will stop the laptop collecting until you can get to it to turn off.
