Noob to Android; any help would be great.

Problem:
* Kies won't recognise my phone: "This device is not supported by Kies 2.0. Make sure that your device is supported and try again."

What I have:
* Samsung S3 GT-I9300
* Kies 2.5.0.12094_28_8
* Odin3 3.04

What I've done:
* Rooted phone with CF-Root-SGS3-v6.0
* Installed CWM (to backup original ROM)
* Upgraded to JB using odin (wrong region)
- - Original firmware (AP:I9300BVALF4, CP:I9300BVLF2, CSC:I9300FTMALF4)
- - Current firmware (AP:I9300XXDLJ4, CP:I9300XXDLID, CSC:I9300OXADLJ4)

Possible problems:
* Rooting phone breaks kies?
* Installing CWM breaks kies?
* Upgrading firmware breaks kies?
* Using wrong firmware region breaks kies?
* Wrong CSC selected?
* Kies needs flash count at 0 (i.e. use triangle away)?

Desired outcome:
* Kies working
* Unbranded/debranded Android JB

What I've tried:
* Kies troubleshoot connection error
* USB debugging is unchecked (have checked/unchecked)
* Changing CSC (using CSC changer)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeap, I had this exact same problem, although all I did was just update the phones software from new through the kies software and nothing else. Refer to the Samsung S3 thread.

Thanks mattwnz.
That post is 290 pages long; I tried finding relevant information, but the only reference to Kies is in the last page and doesn't seem particularly helpful.  Did I missing something?

I had this problem too when i tried to update to Jellybean.  Seems it is quite common as Kies is (IMHO) a pretty crappy piece of software.  Anyhow, I uninstalled and reinstalled Kies and tried again.  Voila, it worked! Give that a go and good luck.

I tried that too. I worked the first time, but themn it stopped working again, and then reinsitlaling made no difference. Has to be the worst software. Just wondering how to upgrade to jelly bean without it. I don't think you can do it on kies air.

once you have rooted and flashed kies won't work and it is rubbish anyway. Since you have gone this far you should try a custom Rom as I take you have flashed stock, don't worry about region or csc.

Thanks jeffnz,

I flashed a stock UK JB image. (just wanted to get rid of the Orange junk bundled software)

What are the advantages of a custom Rom?

What custom Rom would you suggest?

well a lot m,ore options and mods that improve on stock but some like it stock. In custom you can put differant themes, modems, kernels, delete out samsung bloatware etc etc.

There are a lot of all roms!

so have a read and pick one you like and try it for a few days just remember to always make a nandroid backup so you can revert back.

all the info! you will need

I'm on Omega which is the most popular as it can be heavily modded and is very well supported but if you don't like themes and just want the basics wanaam is very good.

You've probably got a CSC code in use that's different from what's supported by the CSC package that comes with the firmware. This mismatch is often enough to prevent Kies from picking up the device.

You can change your CSC code, but this will cause a factory reset. Unless there's some part of Kies that you actually use, I wouldn't worry about it. You can always install Kies Air on the phone and get a lot of the remote management anyway.

Thanks nzgeek,

Is there some way to find out what CSC code is supported by the CSC package that comes with the firmware? I'm curious to see what I'm (not) missing with Kies not working (flashed my phone before I even tried it!).

True, from what I hear there are some good alternatives to Kies (AirDriod, MyPhoneExplorer, etc).
