There's a space at the start of the URL in your link, and if you try to visit it (in Chrome at least) then it goes to a Geekzone error page.

Here's the working link: http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/7/3845282/nvidia-announces-project-shield-handheld-gaming-system

I thought it looked pretty average as i was watching the keynote last night. Who is going to buy this? Very gimmicky and unfortunately surely its doomed to fail. Also the games demonstrated were far from stellar and looked pretty laggy.

And from what I've read so far... the joystick isn't the best

Compared to what though? An Xbox controller?  Remember this thing packs all the hardware, great speaker system, HD screen and battery life that is better than a Nexus 10 inside a package that is not much bigger than said controller.

It's hard to see where this device fits, but as a tech geek, this thing is COOL, will I buy one?  If I had the spare cash around perhaps, but I have a capable phone, PC with xbox controller and an iPad for long trips.

Yep compared to the 360 controller.

As much as I would like one myself, I can't see myself buying it as this will surely attract a premium price.

Think I'll just wait and see what Gabe Newell has in store for us instead :)

Gabe and the crew seem to be keen more on introducing a standard and a platform rather than the hardware themselves it seems. They recently announced funding of a small form factor PC 'Piston' but without specifications it's a little hard to see if it will be worth while, if I remember correctly, Xi3 Piston actually failed to get its kick starter project funded.
