Just got some information about the HP Slate7 availability in New Zealand:

"The HP Slate⁷ is expected to be available in New Zealand from April 2013 with a starting price of NZD $229 for the 8GB Model."

Not bad. I'm guessing it doesn't have a SD/microSD slot or USB OTG, but for that price... Is that the cheapest nz available (soon at least) tablet from a non Chinese manufacturer?

Nothing against Chinese made goods, but most of these cheap tablets are from some online shop or parallel importer where you hope it lasts long enough and you don't need to make a support claim.

One think I'm wondering... with the HP Touchpad, the procedure to replace the battery is quite difficult if you don't want to break something. You need to be very careful (and perhaps lucky).

Of course HP aren't the only ones to make it difficult... Surface Tablet and iPad have glued in battery. Perhaps you are meant to throw them away after a few years. But Nexus 7 is not too bad in that respect.

Perhaps it might be worth waiting for an iFixit review.

Hi all,

I see the latest pricing from HP is now starting at $299 which is probably pushing it for the specs of the device.

At $229, the Slate7 was looking like a good 'cheapie' but now its not far from the Galaxy Tab 2 7 inch. Still a stretch to the Nexus 7 though ...

For some reason my search didn't find the nz link when I checked earlier, but going from USD $169 to NZD $299 does seem like a bit much for what it is.

I'm now thinking of rolling the dice and trying a Chinese cheapie ... like the Ainol Novo 7 Fire/Flame. Good specs, good price, variable build quality.

the build quality has improved considerably over the older models, i just bought my 2nd Ainol, the venus model landed for well under $200 and it feels and looks great. The first one i have had for 6 months and it has never giving me trouble and i now have 2 high spec 7" tablets for under $400.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

mp4nation, they dont have a great range but they are reliable and quick, 3 days from Hong Kong and they have a great online support desk.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Just thought i'd add that $169 USD = ~$200 NZD + GST = $230 NZD so $229 would be fair pricing. Why do we always get gouged when it comes to prices here?

Totally agree, price gouging is pretty depressing here. Look at the Nexus 7 - a so called budget 7-inch that costs almost $500 in mainstream retailers!
