I'm on holiday in the UK and have just bought a S3 I9305 LTE off ebay which is running stock 4.1.2 and is sim locked to T-Mobile.

I'm trying to downgrade it to 4.1.1 so I can try this unlocking method but getting stuck with the Samsung logo (a boot loop??) when I try to flash any stock 4.1.1 ROM (have tried 3 different ones so far - EE in the UK, Vodafone NZ and Portugal)

Have tried via Mobile Odin, desktop Odin and CWM Recovery with no luck.
With CWM an actual error message can be see which is the "e:signature not verified" message. But either my googlefu is weak or there simply isn't that much info on this error.

Any ideas?

go into recovery and under"install zip" menu there should be "toggle signature verification" toggle that off and try again

If you're flashing from Odin and getting a bootloop, make sure you do a factory reset from recovery before and after the flash. 'Dirty flashing' with Odin can often cause issues.

Also can you not use that unlock method on the 4.1.2 ROM?

Cheers for that, it got me past that error but then I ran into "E: can't open /sdcard/update.zip (bad) Installation aborted".

Thanks, I was doing the reset before the flash but doing the factory reset AFTER the flash is what seems to have done it!
Combined with a suggestion from xda my exact working steps were:
- factory reset from recovery, flash from desktop Odin, remove battery while rebooting after flashing, another factory reset from recovery.

That particular unlock method didn't work on 4.1.2 - the necessary menu option doesn't appear.

Excellent. Glad to know that worked.

You can end up with all sorts of weird data and cache conflicts after a flash via Odin.

Did you manage to unlock the phone?

Dunno yet, waiting for the micro sim to arrive. TBH while it was satisfying to get to this point considering how much time I threw at it, it would have been 100 times more cost effective to purchase an unlock code. If the unlock doesn't work I'm gonna do just that :D
