Can someone please enlighten me on how to backup an Android device (Samsung S3) that can then be restored via the cloud like Apple's iCloud does? On an iPhone one just signs in to their Apple account and selects the backup from the cloud to restore from. Everything is restored except the stuff you have synched with a PC library (photos, video, music). All apps and their settings, camera roll, email, texts etc are all restored via the iCloud backup.

Ive tried the Google account backup and restore but it doesn't appear to do anything?

If you've signed into your Google account on the phone and enabled device backup (Settings > Backup & reset) then your apps, wallpaper, wifi settings, personal dictionary and a few other things will be restored when you sign into a new device or a reset one.

If you want to auto backup things like messages, images etc then you'll need to use a 3rd party service. Something like G Cloud Backup works very well.

There isn't one.

No doubt many comments below this will offer you different 3rd party apps and different ways to do it, but there is no single integrated solution like there is with an Apple device.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

OOOHHHH HYPERFIBRE!

Hmm this is disappointing. I managed to get the Google option to restore the apps and a few other settings as described by bradstewart but that's it. The third part app mentioned above also requires the device to be rooted. The solution needs to be simple and for non rooted work phones.

What about Kies does this do a backup and restore like iTunes? I read somewhere that it doesn't.

Best one is Titanium Back up, but you need root access.

Carbon by Koush of Clockwork Mod recovery fame.

Has cloud sync in the paid version and does not require root. It does require a desktop install as part of the setup though.

Does not require root. It just has additional features for rooted users.
