I've been playing a lot of Ingress lately using my Samsung Galaxy SIII (i9300).

On push bike.

To create a more practical and enjoyable Ingress experience I really need to:
  1. Make the handset more secure - there's too much temptation to carry it or chuck it in a loose pocket between closely clustered portals.
  2. Provide a secure location where I can keep the phone awake between portals for XM collection and faster GPS lock.
  3. Utilise an external battery pack - Ingress is a power hungry animal and it chews on the battery like you wouldn't believe. To charge it I need a secure location that I can run a cable to.

Does anyone have any experience with bike-mounts or a good armband, available in (or shippable to) NZ for the Samsung Galaxy S3?

They'd need to have:
  • Charger access for the battery pack (which would then loop over into my backpack).
  • Touch-screen support (I see a lot of cheapy armbands don't support screen use).
  • Easy attach/detach (for bikemount so that when I do need to step away from the bike for those hard to reach portals I can do so quickly).
I'll also happily take recommendations for battery packs :) - the 6k and 12k Power-Pond packs look pretty good as does the 7k Sony unit...

I can't help you with armbands/mounts etc, but these battery packs seem to be very good.

I have 3 of them for mobile Ingressing, and one pack will last me about 8 hrs of Ingress being on constantly.
They say they are $49.99 online, but I think they are still actually $24.99 in-store. Do you have a local Smiths City?

I bought this when it was $4.99, it works pretty well.

Something like this with a mini-to-micro USB adapter might do it. I have the non-powered version which fits a Nexus 4 OK so should fit the S3. You can tap the touchscreen through the plastic but drags and pinches are a bit hit and miss. It is bulky but super robust.

Well what a failure that was, sorry about that.
