Has this happen to anyone?  I pulled my phone out of my pocket and more than 1 or 2 times I saw the data icon was on and a few times the screen was on and it asked if I wanted to enable data roaming.

I did set data roaming off in the settings.  Maybe the phone asked me when I was jumping between telco's as I was roaming?  And it just happened that my thigh pressed against the screen?

It sounds like my 9 days away $70 was gobbled up, not sure if a temporary deposit was taken by 2D.  The local calls made at Auckland airport was just $2.50 and some data use for Facebook in Auckland again was $5 for the 10MB so $65-75 was text messaging while overseas and maybe data got turned on accidentally.

Does anyone know on ICS if one can turn off data for the other apps but still have data line live?  There are many apps going like alarm clock, weather widget, GPS apps getting updates right.  Facebook etc etc ..  Other than turning data entire off, I could only go thru an applications list and hit "restrict background data" but in order to do that on my LG E975 I had to go each and every app listed and set an amount before I can enable it.

I'd turn off data and turn off data roaming too personally. Data roaming detection, i'm not 100% sure on how it works, but i assume it's any network that doesn't match up with the sim's MCC and MNC. Though i'd get a local sim and use local data myself if i was there for a week or more.

I don't think the ability is in 4.0 but 4.1 onwards has the ability to restrict background data entirely:

edit: the E975 is the LG Optimus G! This device should definitely be running 4.1 at least?

In NZ wont mind if i can control which app gets online but in Japan they dont sell sims to tourists other than hiring sims or phones at fifteen bucks a day.

I did disable mobile data, maybe my leg unlocked the phone and clicked enable when it asked me as it jumped to diff telco's. Should had enabled screen pin or pattern lock .....

On the note of software, you do have a 4.1 update available... don't you?

Yep, I have 4.1.2.

What I saw was that outside Tokyo at times it would lose a cellular signal and a moment later it would reconnect automatically.  Then at occasion, it would ask if I want data roaming turned on while the enabled bullet point was selected by default - you then could select enable or disable and continue ....
