Got the phone from the telecom blog so not sure what the deal is with warranty. Has it been a year already _really_?

Anyway, its doing the well documented lousy wifi reception unless I squeeze the phone between the camera and the volume buttons.

Is it likley to be covered given that 1, I didnt pay for the phone, and 2. its just over a year.

Opening it up looks risky and Im not sure what a repair place would charge.

I have had no problem connecting my HTC One X to wifi in many different locations.  The tethering however, has been an interesting experience.

If the One X is lying flat and I am sitting across the room, my laptop will struggle to connect and if it does connect claims DNS problems.  Some times it may work.

If the One X is standing vertically leant against something and I am sitting across the room, my laptop connects fine every time.

It used to be fine. The fact that Bluetooth is stuffed and squeezing the phone makes it all come back makes it clear its not normal crappy performance but a fault that is well documented.

HTC want me to factory reset it and email back which I will do once I have time to back it up etc.

This is an interesting question re does an item gifted have a warranty?

Wouldn't the supplier be liable up to the original purchase price for repairs or replacement?

I wonder this as recently we received a free printer from Oki with the supply of another unit.

I have not problem with the printer but it got me thinking.

Interesting. I may have to investigate this further. My wifi performance has degraded significantly since I first got the phone (another TelecomTech one). At the time, I thought it was due to the JellyBean upgrade. But since then I've installed CyanogenMod, and still have the same crappy wifi range.
