Hi,

Can anyone please help me to get the contacts out this S3 where I can't connect it via the USB connector because that is broken. Is there another way to get the contacts?

Ta.

You can do it via Kies air or bluetooth

bluetooth. I dont have samsung, but does 'kies' allow bluetooth communication?

Do you mean the usb socket on the phone itself is broken or the cable/connector? (if the latter...get a new one)!

I have a mac and theres a few 3rd party applications which let you back up contents of mobile address books... perhaps google it.

I presume you can still operate the phone? How about putting them into Google contacts. Then you can sync them with your new smartphone/desktop/cloud

If you can't see the screen, and USB isn't working, your choices are extremely limited.

There's only one other thing I can think of that might help, but it'll only work if you've installed a ClockworkMod (CWM) recovery on you phone, and have access to another S3 that also has CWM. You'd also need a microSD card or two.

If you're lucky and have all of this, here's what you can do:
1) Download the same kernel as on your phone (or one with the same recovery) and copy it to the microSD card.
2) Boot into CWM on the second phone and do a backup to the microSD card. You'll need this for later, unless the owner doesn't care what happens to the data on the phone.
3) Install the kernel you downloaded in step 1, then go into the Advanced menu and reboot recovery. At this point the second phone should have the same recovery as you're broken phone.
4) At this point you need to do a CWM backup of your broken phone. If you've got 2 microSD cards, you can put both phones in recovery mode and use identical volume/power key presses on each to navigate the menus. If you've only got 1 card, make a note of the key presses on the second phone, then do the same on your broken phone.
5) Wait for the backup to complete. This could take half an hour, and you won't know if it's worked until you put the card in the working phone.
6) Put the card in the working phone and try to restore the backup. If it worked, the second phone should now have your data on it.
7) Copy the bits of data you need to somewhere safe.
8) When you're done, boot back into CWM and restore the backup you made back in step 3. The second phone should now be back in its original state.

Of course, if you're still running the original firmware and don't have CWM, about the only thing you can do is to replace the screen. Either that, or live with the loss of your contacts.

None short of getting the screen repaired to then extract the data, or have you not told us the full story and the mainboard is dead as well?

Bugger

I moved from a basic Nokia to android a few years ago. I was syncing my nokia with outlook at the time.

When I moved to android I just exported all of my contacts from Outlook/Pc Suite and imported them into Gmail.  Cleaned everything up nicely in Gmail, added contact photos to everyone.

Fired up the android phone, added the account and its all done.  I very rarely add contacts while using the phone, I always do it online.  I've never added a contact to the phone itself, always to a google account.

This isn't much use to you now but it is so simple to do and everything is saved in the cloud.  It doesn't matter how many times you wipe the phone, you'll always have your contacts.

If you ever move to another platform, just export them from gmail.

Just export contacts to your SIM. Safest place for them IMO.

And how many can the SIM handle?

I have 360 contacts all with multiple numbers (home, office, mobile) email addresses and Physical addresses.

And when you lose your phone??  By by sim.  Not a good option in my opinion

Have them in your google account / icloud account... Atleast then you can access them from your PC

This is why one should do back-ups of handset data from time to time
