I am thinking of getting either an Amazon Kindle Fire HD or a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.

In terms of price the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10" is only US$15 more than the Amazon Kindle Fire 8.9" - more screen for a small price.

Or should I be looking at the 7" options for both?

I am worried about app availability on Amazon Kindle App Store. Any comments on this or any other feature in general?

This is most likely for my own browsing but most for daughter's to play math games, school apps, etc.

Bit cheaper than the Samsung in JB's at least and has a good reputation for updates if that sort of thing is important to you. Also has the dock option which could be useful for school apps and games.

Otherwise I would go for the 8 or 10 inch galaxy note, mostly because I think the s-pen is a great addition.

The Amazon app store seemed good in terms of app numbers when I tried it on my last phone, but unless things have changed or I was doing it wrong, I could not get it to accept an NZ debit card for payment so I could not take advantage of the app specials that the Amazon app store had.

Funny I was JUST Thinking about making this exact thread. I really like the Kindle 8.9 HD screen (The transformer is a paltry 720P). I have nearly pushed the button on the Kindle so many times, but I heard a new generation of tablets was due out any time, and I want something more lightweight and with a high resolution screen. I wish I could find a 10" with 1080p and 400 grams then I would buy it.

Since then the Amazon Android App Store has been released to 170 countries, so you should try the store again.

Thanks for reminding me of ASUS. Found the ASUS MeMo PAD which is also 7" and at US$ 109 is a pretty good buy.

The 7" tablet is for a school kid. Samsung is a pretty good brand (although my parents-in-law have an ASUS and it's good too). My main question would be in the case of Kindle Fire how is the app availability in the Amazon App Store compared to the Google Play Market?

I looked around and it seems they have a lot less titles... This is the main thing.

As for a new generation, I found on Amazon the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 is being released 7th July.

Google Nexus 7? We have a couple here and they have a great screen. Only thing against them is no expandable storage.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

The (ASUS) Google Nexus 7 looks interesting. But it's almost US$ 100 more than the ASUS MeMO PAD and it's sold by a third party, not Amazon. So I will probably continue to entertain the previously mentioned Samsung Tab 2, Kindle Fire or ASUS MeMO PAD.

Nexus 7 has another plus in so far as, being a Nexus machine, will be supported faster and longer than other offerings.

I've had 4.2.2 for months ;o)

Kindle Fire will be much more limited than other Android devices. And as it's not e-Ink, it won't be any different to read on than any other tablet.

I have a (e-Ink) Kindle for books, and a tablet for everything else.

Thanks... The eInk is not part of the deal (we have two Kindle Paperwhite at home for reading), just looking for a tablet for kids really. I think the app store limitations are most likely the factor ruling out the Kindle Fire.

Leaning towards the ASUS because at $100+ dollars it's a good price.

Just bought a Nexus 7 last night from MobiCityNZ. Its my first tablet so am quite excited about it. Kindle fire HD was ruled out because of being what appeared to me to being largely limited to what Amazon offer. My research seemed to indicate that other app source's could work but took a bit of doing, and me being a complete novice I didn't want to be trying to get stuff to work with my limited knowledge.
Now just have to wait for it to arrive and then for the Wife to "give" it to me as its my birthday prezzy for next month!

I am sure you will enjoy your nexus 7 my partner has recently purchased one and she really enjoys it , much easier to manage on her lap in the evening than the lap top

Got the ASUS Memopad last week. Pretty good device. Also had an update to 4.2.1 as soon as it was out of the box, and now has just been offered another update (still 4.2.1) with performance updates and 50GB on ASUSStorage from 15th August...

Not bad after all...
