Ive got a Samsung Mini GT-S5570 smart phone. Happy with it tho I need to recharge the battery every two/three days. i have had the phone since 23 August 2013.

I have turned off/adjusted all obvious stuff to get better battery life. Still not lasting tho.

I have found some other possibilities that may be "chewing up" power. I wonder whether I can turn them off and obtain better battery performance. I wish to know what are the impacts if i do make changes.

I use the phone for calls, texts, gmail (sometimes), reminders (appointments etc), taking photos then sending them on attached to txt or gmail. Don't use or really need the other features - I have a tablet for internet access etc whilst out and about and travel - using (mostly) free wi-fi spots.

Items I think i can stop/disable/turnoff that I wish to know about are these, all in Settings/Applications/Running Services. In each case there are counters that i can see running, clocking up hours, minutes and seconds (i think). They are:-

1.  Google Services
2.  DRM Content
3.  Software Update
4.  Google Services
5.  Google Play Store
6.  Maps
7.  Samsung Keypad
8.  SNS Service

1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 are running 1 process and 1 service.

4 is running 2 processes and 2 services

8 is running (or not?) 0 process and 1 "service restarting..." and has no counter

My battery use is 49% for call standby, 39% for phone idle and 13% for display.

In each case 1 to 8 i see the option to stop the running services. But ..... what will that do to my phone and how will that affect the manner in which I use my phone. Can I safely just "Stop" all the above running services (except, maybe No 7.) and have no affect on my phone use but achieve much longer battery life?

All help and advice appreciated.

Turn off location services, that can fix the google services battery usage problem. Get BetteryBatteryStats+ to track down partial wakelocks. Get Greeinfy to put apps to sleep.

Honestly though if you're getting 2-3 days from your smartphone you're doing very well, most people charge them daily. I can get 2 days from a battery comfortably, though 3 if I pushed it and didn't use streaming music much.

How long are you expecting to get out of a smartphone that's used daily?

I get 1 day out of mine before I need to charge. I can get a little more if I turn everything off... but then it ain't a smart phone is it!

Ok ..... so 2 - 3 days is pretty normal. I thought I should get up to a week.

I have location services off, that seems to save some power.

Would i have greater battery life if the items I listed were turned off? And, what do the running processes/services I listed do anyway? Is there any value in me not having them available to me - ie 'Stopped" - given my usage pattern?

Not too worried that I have to charge so often, but am interested in the implications of eliminating/stopping some processes/services.

More comment and advice welcome.

If you want a week you'd need a HUGE extended battery. Over a day is a bonus with a smartphone these days.

Turning things off you might get a little more runtime, but only if they're using a lot of CPU or screen time. Radios like wifi, 3g, and gps are biggest power users, i turn them off when they're not required.

its been said but, its a smartphone use it like one and enjoy it as the battery time you are getting is fine. If you want a week get a nokia 3120 (flippant much)

just turn off 'sync'  and that sorts most things out and check location and services so they aren't switched on.

Thanks Jeff and other folks.

So, now I have a smart phone i shall act smart - and live with the battery life that I am experiencing now that i know it is normal. I ddi have a (same make etc) smart phone before Xmas last year but accidentally drowned it in the tide when I fell in up to my armpits. My recollection back then was it lasted longer. Guess the (my) memory's going!

Thanks for help and advices.

Really comes down to what you expect from your phone. The simple reality is phones are a device you charge daily. My phone is typically flat by 7pm most days unless I top it up during the day.

If you want something that lasts for a week there are plenty of low cost non smart devices that will meet this requirement.
