Today i had Telecom VDSL installed (went from 14/1.5mbs to 48/10mbs within 3 hours of install - very happy!!) however when i run speedtest on my phone it tops out at around 11/10mbs despite telling me the wifi connection is 65mbs, it is almost like it is only seeing 802.11b, I can connect my laptop to 802.11n and see 44/10mbs on speedtest so I am relatively confident there is no issue with modem

Phone is HTC One running stock GPe which as far as i can determine should connect 802.11a/b/g/n/ac without any problem, any ideas how where i could start looking to resolve?

Even if it was a speed issue, what do you do on your phone that would require more than 11mbit over WiFi? If I run a speedtest on my phone vs my tablet I get two totally different results, the speedtest mobile app is awful. I would recommend getting a WiFi Router with 802.11ac WiFi support (5GHz)

More a case of want rather than need! That said I do download a few torrents straight to my phone plus download music from my Google music account to store locally on the phone, so being able to do that 4x faster sounds like a better option

On my VDSL connection I can get full line speed over 802.11ac (5GHz WiFi) but can't get over about 20mbit over 802.11n (2.4GHz WiFi) due to interference. It doesn't appear this is the case with you but the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 have very new WiFi chipsets which can sometimes have problems with some WiFi networks.

My recommendations:
1) Use WPA2-AES encryption instead of WPA2-PSK.
2) Disable WiFi Multimedia on the router, this can normally be found under WiFi settings or QoE settings.
3) Get a better router with 5GHz WiFi, this will improve the speed of your WiFi connection to all devices that support it.

The problem also, the phone is connecting at 65mbit (apparent) but once you factor in interference and encryption it basically halves the speed depending on what encryption standard you're using and the amount of 2.4GHz noise there is hanging around. Remember, this router is good for your standard home user but sometimes doesn't meet the needs of some people.

I did notice I had major issues with speed with my old router with my Galaxy S4 - basically it wouldn't get over 2mbit but once I got a better router I can almost achieve line speed over 5GHz WiFi.
